East Bay Women's Soccer Falls to No. 2 UC San Diego, 2-1

LA JOLLA, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer wrapped up their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opening road trip with a, 2-1 defeat against UC San Diego on Sunday morning, September 16 at Triton Soccer Stadium.

With the loss the Pioneers move to 5-2 on the season with an 0-2 mark in conference action. The #2 ranked Tritons improve to 6-0-1 on the year with a 2-0 record in CCAA play.

UCSD was able to hold on the 2-1 victory after a pair of early first half goals. Mary Reilly was awarded her league-leading sixth goal of the season after freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) booted a clearance kick just outside the penalty area outside the top of the box. The ball traveled directly to Reilly as back toward the goal bouncing across the goal line.

The Tritons would add their final goal in the 34th minute as Mia Bonifazi put in a left-footed shot that grazed of Vazquez-Ortiz fingertips into the net off a cross pass from Christina Oddone to give the home team a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

Cal State East Bay answered with a goal of their own in the 47th minute as junior Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) netted a right-footed shot from 20 yards out that travels just over the Trition goalkeeper high into the goal. It was Miguel's second goal of the season as she received a deep pass from sophomore Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.). For Buitrago it was her first helper of the season.

The visiting Pioneers were out shot by the host Tritons 25-5 for the match with two shots on goal from East Bay and six shots on goal from UC San Diego. Chace Miguel, Liz Hernandez (Whittier, Calif.), Eliana Mendoza (Tracy, Calif.), Allison Smith (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Miranda Gonzalez (Santa Rosa, Calif.) all attempted one shot apiece with Miguel's and Hernandez's shots coming on goal.

Freshman goal keeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz clocked 90 minutes in goal and paced the Pioneers with four saves.

Cal State East Bay will return to the Hayward Hills with CCAA contests against Stanislaus State on Friday night, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. and Chico State on Sunday afternoon, September 23 at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be held at Pioneer Stadium.
