Pioneers Sweep Past Concordia, NDNU on Day One of West Region Crossover

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team cruised past two of the top teams in the Pacific West Conference on Friday, sweeping both ends of its doubleheader on the first day of the Division II West Region Crossover tournament.

The Pioneers did not drop a set the whole day, making quick work of the host Concordia Irvine in the morning and Bay Area foe Notre Dame de Namur in the afternoon.

Coming off a trip to Colorado in which CSUEB put up strong statistical numbers against extremely stiff competition, but didn't the results they wanted, the team did both in this weekend's opening match. The Pioneers racked up 50 kills and made just 11 attack error in the three-set victory over the Eagles for a .398 team hitting percentage.

This culminated in the third set, when East Bay hit .517 to quell any hopes of a Concordia comeback. Setter Katie Ireland tallied 42 assists for the match as the CSUEB offense turned in a dominant effort.

Lindsey Ray hit .414 and led the way, posting team highs with 15 kills, 29 attempts and seven digs. Deja Thompson hit .450 with 11 kills and six total blocks. Fellow middle Kathy McKiernan hit .538 with eight kills on just 13 attempts. Tiana Weeks hit .444, adding four kills on just nine swings and five blocks.

Impressively, there was no letdown for East Bay in the second match of the day after such a strong showing in the opener. Perhaps a pair of doubleheaders in the Colorado altitude had them well-conditioned, but whatever the reason, the Pioneers were nearly as efficient against NDNU.

They hit .298 in the second match, with Ray and Thompson pacing the squad with 10 kills each. Weeks had a season-high seven kills and once again didn't make an attack error, notching a .467 hitting percentage. East Bay also tallied 10 services aces, with Ray and Natahlee Wilson leading the way with three apiece.

Ireland continued what has been an outstanding start to her senior season, filling up the scoresheet with 35 assists, 13 digs, three blocks, and five kills on seven attempts.

The Pioneer defense was also stout. None of the three sets were particularly close as CSUEB won each by progressively greater margins. One of the main reasons for that was they held NDNU to just 28 total kills and a .113 hitting percentage.

The East Bay defense posted six blocks and the back line did not make a single error in serve-receive. They racked up 57 digs in the win, with three players reaching double figures. Cassidy Caton matched Ireland with 13, and Ray finished with a team-high 15.

CSUEB will look to keep that momentum going on Saturday when they close out the tournament with two more match against tough Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents Alaska Anchorage and Central Washington.
