East Bay Comeback Attempt Falls Short at #25 UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay softball team opened their four game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road series with a close, 3-2 loss to #25 UC San Diego at Triton Softball Field on Friday evening, March 8.

With the loss the Pioneers moved to 9-14 on the season with a 5-12 mark in conference action.

Abby Greer (L, 3-7) (Beaverton, Ore.)  got the start in the circle for East Bay and tossed a complete game recording two strikeouts while walking three Tritons batters and allowing three runs.

Offense for both teams came in spurts as the only runs for UC San Diego as three run home runs in the opening innings of action gave them host team an early 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers would battle back with runs in the in the sixth and seventh innings. But would ultimately fall short.

CSUEB Female Athlete of the Week Sarah Fukushima (Sacramento, Calif.) led the Pioneers with two hits and a RBI. Jennifer Palmares (Elk Grove, Calif.) was the only other East Bay player to register a multi-hit game with two hits.

Courtney Leyba (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tallied a hit and scored a run while Maddie Ramirez (Chino Hills, Calif.) compiled a run to go along with a hit. Bailee Glover (Reno, Nev.) finished with a hit and one RBI.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against #25 UC San Diego. The first pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for an 1:00 p.m. start.
