SANTEE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team had an outstanding week to finish in third place at the annual SoCal Intercollegiate, hosted by UC San Diego at the par-72 Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
After shooting 297 (+9) and 298 (+10) in Monday's first two rounds, the Pioneers were the best team in the field on Tuesday with a final-round 290 (+2). They finished the 54-hole event at 885 (+21), 14 strokes behind the champion, Dominican, and three strokes behind second-place Dixie State.
Junior
Greg Smith notched his best performance of the season to finish as the individual runner-up. After rounds of 74 (+2) and 72 (E) on Monday, he fired his lowest score of the year with a 67 (-6) to vault all the way up the leaderboard to second place. He tallied 13 birdies for the week, second-most of anyone in the field. Smith's total score of 213 (-3) placed him eight strokes behind the individual medalist, Ty Macias of Dominican.
It was also the best week of 2017-18 for
Jonathan Mulvany, who turned in consistent play in all three rounds to earn a seventh-place finish in the overall field of 60 golfers. The junior shot 72 (E), 73 (+1), and 74 (+2) for a total score of 219 (+3).Â
Declan Illingsworth posted a strong effort as well to notch a top-20 finish. The junior carded back-to-back rounds of 75 (+3) on Monday before finishing with a 74 (+2) on Tuesday to finish at 224 (+8) in a tie for 17th place.
Sophomore
Max Murai and junior
Will Barnett finished with identical totals of 231 (+15) this week to share 39th place. After two straight rounds of 78 (+6), Barnett improved in the final round with a 75 (+3). Murai opened with his best score and was consistent during the two days, shooting 76-78-77.Â
Next up, the Pioneers compete in the annual Hanny Stanislaus Invitational on Apr. 2-3 in Turlock, the final regular season tournament before CCAA Championships.
