JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. -- After an uneven start to the season, the Cal State East Bay men's is picking up momentum with two straight strong performances following this week's eight place finish at Cal Baptist's Lancer Joust.
The Pioneers shot 288 (+8), 291 (+11), and 301 (+21) for a three-round total of 880 (+40) at the par-70 Goose Creek Golf Club. They were 30 strokes behind team champion Cal Baptist and 22 strokes back of conference rival Chico State, which took second.
This was a huge week for the Pioneers in terms of head-to-head results, as they finished ahead of 12 schools in the 20-team field. That group includes some strong squads, including Sonoma State, Regis, Holy Names, Cal State San Marcos, and Indianapolis.
Will Barnet led CSUEB tying for 16th place in the overall field of 104 golfers. The junior was outstanding on Monday, carding 70 and 71. He finished up with a 76 on Tuesday to finish with a 54-hole total of 217 (+7).Â
It was also a strong week for
Declan Illingsworth, whose rounds of 71, 74, and 75 gave the junior a share of 28th place at 220 (+10). Just one stroke behind him was fellow Englishman
Greg Smith, who turned in scores of 72, 73, and 76 to finish tied for 35th at 221 (+11).
After stumbling Monday morning with an 80,
Jonathan Mulvany was excellent in the final two rounds, carding 73 and 74 to move up to 60th place overall with a total of 227 (+17).
Raja Deal competed in this second tournament of the season for the Pioneers and posted a solidly consistent performance with rounds of 75, 77, and 76. The senior earned a share of 65th place at 228 (+18), one stroke behind Mulvany.
The Pioneers are back home for Spring Break this week, but they'll return south this weekend for the annual UC San Diego SoCal Intercollegiate on Mar. 26-27.
