Friday Results: Prelims | Finals
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Cal State East Bay swim team scored points in three more events Friday at 2018 NCAA Division II Swim Championships at Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Pioneers are now in 12th place in the team standings with 93 points heading into the final day of the meet.
Morgan McClure got the morning started by finishing 12th in prelims of the 100 Back to qualify for the consolation final in her last individual event of the program. Her time of 55.64 is a new school record, breaking the mark set last year by former teammate
Mariam Lowe. She now owns six individual program records -- the 200 Free, 100 and 200 Back, and all three IM events.Â
McClure went on to finish 11th in the evening event final in 55.71, notching an All-American honorable mention for the senior. It closes out an impressive week for the Sacramento native, who swam in nine events for the Pioneers and scored points in every one of them.Â
In the 100 Breast,
Claire Beaty raced to a tie with Fresno Pacific's Daria Belova for eighth place during prelims. The pair touched the wall in identical times of 1:02.08, necessitating a swim-off to determine who earned the final spot in the championship final. Beaty gave an inspired effort, but was out-touched by Belova in a very close race, settling for ninth.
Beaty didn't have much left in the tank for the evening after having spent the previous night suffering through a bout of food poisoning. She competed in the finals nonetheless, scoring points with a 16th place finish in 1:04.14.
The Pioneers closed out Friday's action with a solid performance in the 800 Free Relay, making the squad 4-for-4 in terms of scoring points with their relays at the national meet. The East Bay foursome of McClure,
Vivy Hua,
Shelby Parker, and
Serene Augustain turned in a time of 7:30.82 to finish in 16th place overall, with all four claiming another All-America honorable mention.
2018 NCAA Championships close with the final set of morning prelims and evening finals on Saturday.
Allie Klinger is eligible to compete in the 100 Free for the Pioneers, and then Beaty will hope to bounce back and race as the No. 2 seed in the 200 Breast.
