AMARILLO, Texas -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished 15th this week out of 23 teams at the Regional Preview tournament. The Pioneers carded rounds of 302 (+18) and 297 (+13) for a 36-hole total of 599 (+31) at the par-71 La Paloma Golf Club, the same venue that will host the NCAA Division II West/South-Central Regionals in May.
Colorado-Colorado Spring bested the field at +6, one stroke ahead of Chico State and two strokes better than Holy Names. The Pioneers finished strong in Tuesday's second round to beat eight teams, while finishing just two strokes behind Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines (+29).
Will Barnett led the way for East Bay on the strength of an even-par 71 in the opening round. He followed that up with a 76 (+5) this morning to finish tied for 25th place in the overall field of 120 golfers at 147 (+5). 
Greg Smith finished two strokes behind Barnett, following an opposite trajectory from his teammate. The junior started with a 77 (+6) Monday, but bounced back with a 72 (+1) Tuesday, matching CSUEB's lowest score of the second round. He finished with a share of 42nd place at 149 (+7).
Two stokes back of Smith was fellow Englishman 
Declan Illingsworth in a tie for 62nd place at 151 (+9). The junior had a consistent week to finish right in the middle of the field with rounds of 77 (+6) and 74 (+3). 
Max Murai was one stroke behind Illingsworth in the overall pack with a share of 69th place. The sophomore stumbled to an 80 (+7) in round one, but was outstanding on Tuesday, matching Smith's 72 (+1) to move more than 30 spots up the leaderboard and finish at 152 (+10).
Chris Carney rounded out CSUEB's week with rounds of 80 and 82 for a total score of 162 (+20) and a share of 115th place. 
The Pioneers are back in action next week when they travel south to Jurupa Valley for the annual Cal Baptist Lancer Joust on Mar. 19-20.
