HAYWARD, Calif., -- It homecoming week in Hayward and the Cal State East Bay women's basketball will welcome Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills for California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) weekend matchups. The Pioneers fell to the Golden Eagles, 63-52 and the Toros, 80-79 on the road to kick off conference action this season.
CSUEB are currently sitting sixth in the CCAA standings with a 13-11 mark on the season and a 9-9 record in conference play.
LAST ACTION
The Cal State East bay women's basketball team lost on the road in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday evening when Jovanah Arrington's long three-pointer beat the overtime buzzer to give Humboldt State a 76-73 win over the Pioneers.
CSUEB, which entered the important late-season California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) contest one-and-a-half games behind the Jacks for second place in the standings, fell to 13-10 with a 9-8 conference record. HSU improved to 12-9 and added more distance between itself and the Pioneers with an 11-5 record in CCAA games.
Morgan Greene had a typically outstanding performance, posting 22 points and 13 rebounds and going 8-for-12 from the floor to notch her 17th double-double of the season.
East Bay led most of the fourth quarter as well, but the home team slowly erased their deficit and finally took their first lead of the second half with 3:27 remaining.
Elayshia Woolridge made some big shots when the Pioneers needed them, scoring 10 of her 17 points in the second half.
After a crucial play in which CSUEB allowed an offensive rebound after a missed HSU free throw, which led to a three-point play by the Jacks, the Pioneers trailed by two with under a minute.
On a well-designed out-of-bounds play, Woolridge knocked down a short jumper to tie the score at 69-69 with 40 seconds left. After a defensive stop, East Bay got the ball back with a chance to win, but Woolridge wasn't able to get a shot off, forcing overtime.
The Jacks again took a two-point lead late in the extra period before a layup by Greene tied the score at 73-73 with 24 seconds left. The Jacks called timeout to set up their final play, which the Pioneers seemed to have well-defended as the final seconds ticked down. But Arrington was able to hit a long triple as the buzzer sounded to give the Jacks the win.
Savannah McGill tallied eight points and four rebounds, while
Kayley Hsiung added seven points.
The Pioneers will have to put this tough loss behind them with another crucial road matchup awaiting them against Chico State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team came up just short again Saturday night to close out a tough road trip, falling 70-64 at Chico State.
The Pioneers split their season series with the Wildcats and drop their third straight overall, falling to 13-11 with an even 9-9 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games. Chico improves to 12-9 and 10-7 in conference play.
Whitney Branham, the CCAA's leading scorer, heated up for Chico in the third and scored 10 of her team-high 17 points in the second half. Her three-pointer on the Wildcats' final possession of the quarter put the home team ahead 52-20 heading into the fourth.
The Pioneers fell behind by seven early in the final period, but they showed resiliency at the end of a long road trip.
Morgan Greene scored on two straight possessions, then
Kayley Hsiung hit a three, and then
Kayla Blair made one of two free throws to tie the score at 64-64.
It was another outstanding performance for Greene, who had one of her most dominant nights of the season offensively to pick up her 18th double-double. The sophomore racked up 29 points on 13-for-17 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Blair was also impressive, finishing 5-for-7 from the floor with 12 points and six boards. Unfortunately there weren't many highlights beyond those two, as the other three Pioneer starters combined to go 2-for-25 from the field.
Bri Guillory added seven points on 2-for-3 from the field, and
Kincso Kelemen and
Janae Chamois scored five apiece.
Elayshia Woolridge tallied a team-high five assists, but the junior was held out of the scoring column.
PIONEER POINTS
Already a two-time CCAA Player of the Week this season,
Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) had another award-worthy performance as the Pioneer women's basketball team fell in two games on the road. Greene put up back-to-back 20-point performances with 22 points and 13 rebounds against Humboldt and 29 points and 11 rebounds versus Chico State.
For the season, Greene holds the second-highest rebounding average in the nation (12.9 rpg). She also leads the CCAA in field goal percentage (.581) and ranks fifth in scoring (16.0 ppg). Greene ranks second in the the nation with 18 double-doubles on the season.
Junior guard
Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) is averaging 13.2 points and 28.5 through 19 starts this season. Woolridge is leading East Bay with 3.4 assists per contest while shooting 41.9% from the field. She is currently first on the Pioneers with 81 total assists.
Woolridge has scored in double figures in 18 games this season including four of the last five games. She has also dished out five or more assists in nine different contests so far. Woolridge is also rebounding at a 3.8 per game clip while sitting second on the Pioneers with 33 steals.
Senior
Janae Chamois (Eastvale, Calif.) was been shooting lights out from deep this season. Chamois third in the CCAA with 48 made three-pointers on the season at a 34.0% accuracy from beyond the arc. She is tallying 8.8 points per game with 2.0 made three-point field goals. She scored a career-high 22 points and fell one short of the school record with six three-point field goals in a win over Cal Baptist in December 19.
SCOUTING CAL STATE L.A.
The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles are currently fifth in the CCAA standings with a 11-12 record and a 9-9 mark in CCAA action after wins over Chico State, 78-51 and Cal State Dominguez Hills, 57-50. Rikke Fabricius leads the Golden Eagles with 14.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Christine Delapina is adding 9.9 points and 4.5 assists for Cal State L.A.
SCOUTING CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS
The Dominguez Hills Toros are in the seventh spot in the CCAA standings back-to-back losses to Humboldt State, 62-58 and Cal State L.A., 57-50. Nautica Morrow leads the Toros with 18.1 points and 3.2 assists. Taylor Farris is chipping in 12.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per outing.
