East Bay Women Outlast Stanislaus 61-53 in Regular Season Finale

TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team closed out the 2017-18 regular season on a high note Thursday evening, defeating Stanislaus State by a final score of 61-53 at Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Pioneers turned in another stout defensive effort, holding the Warriors to just 31.5 percent shooting. After trailing early, they limited the Warriors to eight points in the second quarter and 10 points in third as they built a double-digit lead.

East Bay enters the postseason with a record of 16-12. They posted a 12-10 mark in CCAA play, the program's sixth straight season above .500. They qualify for the CCAA tournament for the seventh straight year.

After the Warriors came out hot and led 18-14 after the first quarter, the Pioneers came storming back in the second. They hit seven three-pointers in the period, four of them by Kincso Kelemen, to take a nine-point lead into halftime.

Overall it was one of CSUEB's best games of the season shooting from beyond the arc as they finished 10-for-26. Kelemen went 5-for-7 from long distance for night, notching a season-high 15 points.

East Bay's defense was able to prevent the Warriors from going on any extended scoring runs in the second half, limiting them to 24 percent shooting as the Pioneers played Stanislaus even over the final 20 minutes. The home team hit a couple three-pointers late in the fourth to cut their deficit to seven, but the Pioneers were able to draw fouls on the other end, and free throws by Elayshia Woolridge, Kayley Hsiung, and Morgan Greene in the final minutes clinched the victory.

It was a relatively quiet night for Greene, who played just 25 minutes due to foul trouble, finishing with 11 points on an efficient 4-for-5 from the floor to go with seven rebounds and two blocks.

Woolridge went 4-for-5 from the field as well, tallying 14 points along with a team-high seven assists. The junior surpassed the 100-assist mark for the season and reached double figures in scoring for the 20th time.

Junior Savannah McGill turned in one of her best performances of the year, grabbing 10 of her game-high 13 rebounds in the first half. She went 5-for-7 from the field to finish with 11 points, notching her second double-double. As a team, CSUEB shot 45.7 percent for the game.

The Pioneers will enter next week's CCAA tournament as the No. 6 seed and will hit the road for their opening round game Tuesday evening. East Bay's opponent is still yet to be determined as the rest of the conference concludes their regular season schedules over the next two days.
