Pioneer Women Fall To Golden Eagles, 72-64

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team opened their Homecoming weekend home stand with a tough, 72-64 loss to Cal State L.A. Friday evening, February 9 in Pioneer Gymnasium.

The Pioneers move to 9-10 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action and 13-12 overall. With the win the Golden Eagles swept the season series over CSUEB after defeating the Pioneers, 63-52 in the Eagles Nest on November 18.

East Bay had a tough time knocking down shots against a tough CSULA frontcourt. The Pioneers shot just 36.7% (22-for-60) from the field for the contest. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded the Pioneers, 41-33 while narrowly edging East Bay, 32-30 on points in the paint.

The Pioneer found themselves down, 25-15 after the opening quarter of play before battling back to trail the Golden Eagles, 38-29 sparked by a 7-0 run led by Morgan Greene and Bri Guillory.

Despite the horrid shooting-night the Pioneers still found themselves in the game early in the fourth quarter with another 7-0 run that led them to an 18-11 third quarter advantage.

Sophomore forward Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) paced the Pioneers with 20 points and 11 rebounds on 8-for-11 shooting from the charity stripe. She added two assists and two steals in 35 minutes of action. Greene now has 19 double-doubles on the season.

Junior guard Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) notched 15 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the floor. Woolridge led CSUEB with five assists while adding a rebound in 34 minutes on the court.

Cal State East Bay shot just 22.2% (4-for-18) from long range for the evening while Cal State L.A. shot 43.8% (7-for16) from beyond the arc and 44.6% (25-for-56) from the floor for the game.

The Pioneers did however outscore the Golden Eagles in bench production, 23-16. Senior guard Bri Guillory (Long Beach, Calif.) led the East Bay reserves with a season-high 13 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Junior center Savannah McGill (Lacey, Wash) pulled down 10 rebounds off the bench for CSUEB. McGill chipped in three points and two assists in 23 minutes.

The Pioneers will conclude their Homecoming home stand with a matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday evening, February 10. Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m. in Pioneer Gymnasium. East Bay fell to the Toros, 80-79 on November 17 in the Torodome.
