WEEK IN REVIEW
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team dropped its second straight game to open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday evening as Cal State Dominguez Hills held off the Pioneers in a tight contest by a final score of 73-65.
Â
CSUEB struggled at the outset as the visiting Toros grabbed an early advantage. The Pioneers trailed 22-9 at one point, but quickly made some adjustments and closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run.
Â
East Bay's defense turned in a strong effort the rest of the contest, with the Pioneers slowly chipping away at their deficit. They trailed by just five at halftime, then the teams spent nearly the entire second half separated by one or two possessions.
Â
Savannah McGill scored 10 of her 13 points in the final two quarters, and finished tied for the team lead in scoring with fellow senior
Elayshia Woolridge, who scored eight of her 13 after halftime. Despite this, East Bay never held a lead the entire evening. It seemed that every time they scored to get within range of tying the game or taking the lead, the Toros answered with a big bucket of their own.
Â
With just over six minutes remaining,
Faith Turner scored in the paint to make the score 55-53 in favor of CSUDH. But the visitors responded with two quick layups to grab momentum back. After a Pioneer turnover, Lea Anderson knocked down a three to put the Toros up 10 -- a deficit East Bay wasn't able to erase over the final few minutes.
Â
McGill went 5-for-10 from the field for the night and finished with a team-high nine rebounds. Turner and junior
Jojuan Carrington each added nine points in the frontcourt for the Pioneers. Carrington also pulled in five rebounds and tallied three steals.
Â
Junior
Regina Sankey scored eight points on 3-for-4 shooting in just 13 minutes off the bench, while freshman guard
Delia Moore contributed six points and six boards in 15 minutes.
Â
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball program captured their first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory of the season with a 53-51 win over Cal State L.A. Saturday afternoon, December 1 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
Â
Junior
Regina Sankey (San Jose, Calif.) scored the game-winning layup with less than four seconds to play to secure the win for the Pioneers. Sankey received the inbounds pass from
Savannah McGill (Lacey, Wash.) and weaved through the Golden Eagles traffic for the tough right hand finish. Cal State East Bay closed the game on an 11-0 run.
Â
Sankey finished with six points and two steals in only 15 minutes of action. The win also improves East Bay's record to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
Â
Savannah McGill led all scorers with 14 points and 14 rebounds on 5-for-11 shooting from the floor. For McGill, it was her third double-double of the season. She also added two assists and two steals while going a perfect 3-for-3 from the foul line.
Â
The Pioneers used huge second and fourth quarters to take the lead at the half and then to pick up the home win. The Pioneer defense held the Golden Eagles to 33.3% (17-for-51) shooting accuracy from the field, including 33.3% (4-for-12) from three-point land.
Â
Freshman
Delia Moore (Merced, Calif.) notched a career best 11 points on 2-for-2 shooting from the field while knocking down her lone three-pointer on the night. Moore led CSUEB with three assists to go along with four rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes off the bench.
Â
Moore's huge night off the bench helped the Pioneer reserves outscore the visiting Eagles 26-4 for the contest. East Bay narrowly won the battle in the painted area with a 38-37 rebounding advantage and outscoring CSULA 22-20 in points inside the painted area.
Â
Both teams turned the ball over 22 times but Cal State East Bay was able to score 23 points off the visitor's mistakes.
Â
Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) added eight points and four rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
Â
PIONEER POINTS
CSUEB has been taking care of business on the defensive end for the majority of the season, and when they're playing well, they've been extremely difficult to score on. Twice the Pioneers have held opponents under 50 points, and they rank seventh in the CCAA overall allowing just 60.4 points per game. East Bay is also sixth in the conference in opponent field goal percentage, sixth in opponent three-point shooting, and fourth in rebounding defense.
Â

She is also leading the team with 27.4 minutes per game, including shooting 51.7% from the field and 45.0% from three-point range while also leading the squad with 19 assists.
Â
Fellow senior Elayshia Woolrige is adding 7.0 points per contest through 25.2 minutes per game. Woolridge is adding 2.3 rebounds while leading the Pioneers shooting 78.6 from the foul line.

Â
