HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team continued its hot start to the season Thursday night with an 82-69 victory over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Faculty Appreciation Night at Pioneer Gym.
The Pioneers are now 6-1 overall, and it marks the first time they've won their first two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games since 2011.Â
East Bay never trailed in the game and held a double-digit advantage most of the way thanks to yet another efficient offensive performance. They shot 48.3 percent from the floor as a team and went 8-for-21 from long distance. Perhaps most impressively, the Pioneers committed just five turnovers the entire evening, preventing the Toros from having a chance to go on a scoring run.Â
Dominguez Hills shot the ball well too, finishing at 49 percent from the field for the night. They also out-rebounded East Bay by a margin of 37-29, but the home team's ability to take care of the ball kept them in control throughout.Â
For the second game in a row, sophomore
Nai Carlisle turned in a stellar effort, needing just eight shots to score a game-high 20 points. The Indiana native went 6-for-8 from the field and 8-for-10 on free throws, and he didn't turn the ball over once despite playing a team-high 31 minutes.
Juwan Anderson added 15 points and led the Pioneers with four assists. Fellow senior
Deiondre Bird also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting.Â
Senior
Evan Wardlow notched nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Redshirt freshman
John Duff contributed eight points in his first career start, and junior
Trent Warren totaled seven points, going 2-for-4 from three-point range.
The game was tight through the first 10 minutes before CSUEB rattled off a 13-0 run to turn a two-point game into a 15-point advantage. The Pioneers went into halftime up by 11 and led by as many as 20 in the second half. CSUDH cut into that deficit down the stretch, but the visitors were never able to get closer than eight points.
The Pioneers return to the court Saturday afternoon and will look to remain unbeaten in CCAA play against perhaps the toughest opponent they've seen yet. Tip-off against Cal State LA is set for 3 p.m. at Pioneer Gym following the women's game.Â
