Pioneers Off to Best Start In CCAA Era with Road Victory over Fresno Pacific

FRESNO, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball squad picked up a terrific come from behind, 73-66 road victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday evening, November 17.
 
With the win the Pioneers improve to 4-0 on the season for the first time in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
 
The Pios were lights out for the ball game, shooting north of 45% in both halves and for the contest. It was the fourth straight game in which CSUEB has shot over 40% accuracy from the field. Despite the hot shooting the Pioneers still found themselves down 39-33 at the intermission.
 
The outing featured seven lead changes and six ties as both teams led by nine throughout the contest. Four Pioneers notched double figure scoring outputs en route to the win.
 
Ant Navarrete (San Lorenzo, Calif.) logged his third double double of the season with 12 points and game high 14 rebounds on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. Navarrete finished with a steal an assist.
 
Evan Wardlow (Lake View Terrance, Calif.) tied a game-high with 16 points, his best scoring output as a Pioneer. Wardlow grabbed nine rebounds while going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in 32 minutes of action.
 
Nai Carlisle (West Lafayette, Ind.) also compiled 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the, including 2-for-4 from beyond the arc on a team high 35 minutes of t action. Carlisle lead East Bay with four assists and tied the team lead with two steals.
 
Senior point guard Juwan Anderson (Oakland, Calif.) tallied 13 points while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. Anderson dished out three assists and grabbed two rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
 
The Pioneers outscored the Sunbirds 40-27 in the second half on 46.67% (14-for-30) from the the field. The East Bay defense was able to accumulate 18 points on 15 turnovers from Fresno Pacific while holding the host FPU to 33.3% (11-for-33) shooting from the field in the second half.
 
The battle in the painted area was tightly contested by both teams as both squads corralled 42 rebounds each. The Pioneers narrowly edged out the Sunbirds in paint points 30-28.
 
Patrick Marr (Clayton, Calif.) chipped in seven points with a career best four blocks, four rebounds and two steals.
 
The Pioneer reserves also outscored the Fresno Pacific bench 9-5. Trent Warren (Melbourne, Australia) led the Pios with five points in 15 minutes. Warren has knocked down at least one three-pointer in each game so far.
 
Cal State East Bay will continue their road trip with another non-conference matchup against Dominican University on Tuesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m.
