WEEK IN REVIEW
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball opened their 2018-19 campaign with an impressive 51-47 victory over Western Oregon to kickoff the Veteran's Day Classic on Friday afternoon in Pioneer Gymnasium.
Â
The Pioneers found themselves down 47-44 with just under two minutes to play when
Kayley Hsiung (Bakersfield, Calif.) tied the game with a thee-point field goal from the left wing. Then with less than a minute to go in regulation, newcomer
Courtenay Brown (Oakland, Calif.) put the Pioneers ahead 50-47 with a three-point basket from the right wing.
Â
Hsiung finished with seven points on 3-for-8 shooting with four rebounds and two assists in 26 minutes of action. Brown was one of two Pioneers to notch double figures with 10 points, including two three-pointers and three steals in 28 minutes off the bench.
Â
East Bay would go on to force a five-second violation before icing the contest with late game free throws. Despite the clutch shooting from distance in the final minutes of action, the Pioneers only shot 3-for-17 (17.6%) from beyond the arc.
Â
The Pioneers more than made up for their tough shooting night with stout defense. East Bay forced the visiting Wolves to shoot just 32.6% (15-for-46) including a porous 1-for-9 from three-point range (11.1%). CSUEB also forces WOU into 20 turnovers while allowing only nine assists.
Â
The ball game featured six ties and nine lead changes over with neither team leading by more than six points. But it was the Pioneers bench points and paint production that was the major outlier in the victory. East Bay won the points in the paint battle 30-12 while also outscoring the Wolves 25-4 in bench points.
Â
Junior forward
Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) collected her first double-double of the season as she grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Greene also paced the Pioneers with four steals.
Â
Sophomore center
Faith Turner (Auburn, Wash.) tallied eight points on 3-for-4 shooting from the floor and three rebounds in 13 minutes.
Madison Schiller (Ridgecrest, Calif.) and
Ruobing Bai (Beijing, China) scored four points each. Schiller added four steals.
Â
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team concluded their Veteran's Day Classic weekend with a tough 61-26 loss to the visiting Concordia University (Ore.) Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon, November 10 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
Â
It was a rough afternoon offensively for the Pioneers as they only converted on 21.4% (9-for-42) shooting from the field including only connecting on 2-for-15 (13.3%) from beyond the arc. East Bay also racked up 32 turnovers that turned into 27 points for the Cavaliers.
Â
Defensively the Pioneers played fairly well. They held the hot shooting Cavaliers to just 37.7% (23-for-61) shooting from the floor. But Concordia did knock down 40% (8-for-20) of their shots from three-point distance.
Â
Junior forward
Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) paced the Pioneers with eight points and eight rebounds on 4-for-7 shooting from the field. She added two assists and a steal in 25 minutes of action.
Â
Concordia narrowly edged out Cal State East Bay in the battle on the boards, 39-38. But the Cavaliers did however outscore the Pioneers 22-14 in points inside the painted area. The Pioneers got 15 points from their reserve players.
Â
Madison Schiller (Ridgecrest, Calif.) contributed four points, two rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes off the bench.
Courtenay Brown (Oakland, Calif.) added four points, one rebound and one steal in 27 reserve minutes.
Â
The Pioneers got big rebounding games from front court players
Savannah McGill (Lacey, Wash.) and
Faith Turner (Auburn, Wash.). McGill grabbed nine rebounds to go along with three points and one assist and Turner corralled five rebounds with three points and one steal in 11 minutes of action.
Â
Jojuan Carrington (Oakland, Calif.) chipped in two points, one rebound, one assist and one steal while
Delia Moore (Merced, Calif.) added two points, a team high three steals, three rebounds and an assist.
Â
With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-1 on the season.
