East Bay Men Erase Holy Names 75-60

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team secured a 75-60 victory over Holy Names on Saturday evening in the final game of the Veterans Day Classic at Pioneer Gym.

The Pioneers now boast a 2-0 record after knocking off a pair of non-conference opponents in the opening weekend of 2018-19. This marks the first time in eight years that East Bay has won its first two games of the regular season.

CSUEB's starting backcourt of Juwan Anderson and Nai Carlisle was outstanding in the win, combining for 38 points and all five of the team's made three-pointers. Overall, the Pioneers shot 48.1 percent from the field, while their defense held the Hawks to just 36.7 percent.

That defense was particularly impressive in the early going, as the home team held Holy Names to just 6-for-25 from the field in the first half and took a 10-point lead into the halftime break.

The Hawks did eventually heat up after intermission behind guard Andre Green, who finished with 22 points. East Bay's lead hovered in the single digits for most of the second half, and the visitors even briefly grabbed a lead, 52-51, before a Carlisle three-pointer put the Pioneers back ahead.

They never looked back after that, pulling away for the double-digit victory over the final eight minutes. Anderson took over down the stretch, scoring 16 of his 22 points in the second half and burying three shots from long distance. The senior also tallied 5 rebounds, four assists, and three steals on the night.

Carlisle notched 16 points on an efficient 7-for-9 shooting performance. Fellow newcomer Ant Navarrete also reached double figures with 10 points, and the junior added five boards.

Senior Evan Wardlow contributed eight points and six boards, while Patrick Marr grabbed a
team-high seven rebounds. Junior Trent Warren was impactful in 12 minutes off the bench, tallying eight points and four rebounds.

The Pioneers return to action next week with a pair of road games against two more Pacific West Conference opponents. They visit Academy of Art on Wednesday evening before traveling to Fresno Pacific next Saturday.
