Late Second Half Surge Propels Toros Past Pioneers, 3-2

CARSON, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer program concluded their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) weekend road trip with a, 3-2 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday morning, October 6 at Toro Stadium.

With the loss the Pioneers fall to 3-7-1 on the season with a 1-4-1 mark in conference action.

The Pioneers entered the scoring column early as senior Jonathan Ayala (Concord, Calif.) scored in the 9th minute of action. Fellow senior Jonathan Cuevas (Reno, Nev.) and freshman Michael Francisco (Hayward, Calif.) were awarded the assists on the play as Cuevas dribbled into the goal and passed to Francisco on the right side before crossing back to Ayala in the box for an easy score.

For Ayala, it was his team leading sixth goal of the season and his fourth goal in conference action. Francisco now leads CSUEB with four assists, including three assists in CCAA play.

The Pioneers carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission and opened the second half with a goal by freshman Marco Campos (Hayward, Calif.) to claim a 2-0 lead.

Campos was assisted on freshman Joe Takada (Honolulu, Hawaii) and senior Ben Reiter (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) as Takada and Reiter moved the ball on the left side and crossed the pass into Campos in the box for a one touch high kick score. It was the first career goal and assist as a Pioneer for Campos and Takada and it was Reiter's first assist of the season.

But it would be the host Toros that would get a second half hat trick by George Almeida to claim a 3-2 home victory.

Dominguez Hills held the shot advantage over East Bay, 27-13 with 11 shots on goal for the Toros and eight shots on goal for the Pioneers.

Jonathan Ayala paced the Pioneers with four shots with two shots coming on goal. Marco Campos added three shots with two shots on goal as well. Jonathan Cuevas and Michael Francisco both had two attempts with one shot on goal for Cuevas and two shots on goal from Francisco. Tin Nguyen (San Diego, Calif.) and Keith Moreno (Maywood, Calif.) each attempted one shot with Nguyen's shot coming on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Omar Coronel (Santa Rosa, Calif.) clocked all 90 minutes in goal and logged six saves on the game.

The Pioneers will have matches rivals Cal State Monterey Bay and SF State next week as they continue CCAA action.
