East Bay Men's Soccer Conclude Home Slate with 3-0 Loss To Cal Poly Pomona on Senior Day

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer squad concluded it's 2018 regular season home schedule with a 3-0 loss to the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos on Sunday afternoon, October 21 at Pioneer Stadium.

It was Senior Day for East Bay as seniors: Omar Coronel, Luis Salazar, Carter Magee, Ben Reiter, Jonathan Ayala, Jonathan Cuevas, Keith Moreno, Brett Fuchs, Jared Johnson and Argenis Torres were honored with a ceremony prior to the start of the game.

With the loss, CSUEB moves to 3-11-1 on the season with a 1-8-1 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.

The opening 20 minutes of the game saw back-and-forth action from both sides as the Pioneers and Broncos looked to capitalize on each others early mistakes. But in the 25th minute of action CPP was able to convert on a goal by Eduardo Faria to take a 1-0 lead.

The score would remain the same as the teams headed into the locker room for the intermission.

The second half began where it left off for Cal Poly Pomona as they converted on a penalty kick to take a 2-0 advantage. The Broncos would add one final goal in the 86th minutes of play to leave Pioneer Stadium with a 3-0 conference victory, their ninth of the season.

Despite ending the game scoreless, it was not for lack of offensive aggression from the Pioneers as they out shot the Broncos, 13-11 for the game. But it was CPP that held an 8-3 shot on goal advantage over CSUEB.

Senior Ben Reiter (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) led the East Bay attack with four shot attempted with one shot on goal. Fellow seniors Jonathan Ayala (Concord, Calif.) and Jonathan Cuevas (Reno, Nev.) each took three shots and one shot on goal apiece. Seniors Luis Salazar (San Lorenzo, Calif.) and Jared Johnson (Los Altos, Calif.) along with freshman Joe Takada (Honolulu, Hawaii) all chipped in one shot each.

Senior goalkeeper Omar Coronel (Santa Rosa, Calif.) got the start in goal before being relieved by junior Carlos Moreno (Patterson, Calif.) who saw his first action of the season. Moreno logged 85 minutes of play and recorded a season best five saves on the day.

Cal State East Bay will conclude their 2018 regular season with road games against Sonoma State on Thursday afternoon, October 25 and Saturday morning, October 27.
