DANIELS, W.Va.
-- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team got a look at the course that will host NCAA Division II Championships in the Spring and battled some of the top teams in the nation this week at the National Preview tournament on the Cobb Course at Glade Springs.

The Pioneers posted solid overall results, improving their team score in each of the three rounds. They took 13th place at the event after turning in team totals of 299, 293, and 291 for a 54-hole total of 883 (+31). No. 1 ranked Barry edged No. 3 Lynn for the team title.

A pair of senior returners led the way with under-par scores in Tuesday's final round to close out the week on a high note. Will Barnett carded 73-74-69 at the par-71 course to finish with a total of 216 (+3). His third-round score faulted the Australia native into the top-20 individually, notching a 16th place finish. Greg Smith matched Barnett's 69 on Tuesday after shooting 76-73 in Monday's rounds. He finished two strokes behind Barnett overall, earning a share of 26th place at 218 (+5).

Newcomer Joey Herrera turned in another consistently strong performance with rounds of 75-73-73 to finish at 221 (+8) in a tie for 39th place in the overall field of 90 golfers.

Senior Declan Illingsworth shot 75-74 on Monday, then added an 80 to CSUEB's team score this morning in the final round to notch a share of 73rd place individually at 229 (+16).

Junior Max Murai followed a similar trajectory. The left-hander opened with a 77, then fired an excellent round of 73 Monday afternoon before closing out the tournament with an 81 on Tuesday. Murai tied for 80th place with a total of 231 (+18).

Next up, the Pioneer men have a week off before continuing their Fall schedule in St. George, Utah at the Regional Preview tournament, which will be hosted by Dixie State on Oct. 15-16.
