Pioneers Use Second Half Surge for 3-2 "Pink Game" Win over Coyotes

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer program pulled off an astounding 3-2 comeback victory over the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Friday afternoon, October 19 at Pioneer Stadium.

As part of their "Dig For A Cure" pink game, CSUEB sported pink warmup shirts in pink goalie uniforms in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 7-6-2 on the season with a 2-5-2 mark in the CCAA action as they keep their postseason hopes alive.

The Pioneers found themselves down 2-0 early in the the first half of action after goals by the Coyotes in the 32nd and 39th minutes of play.

But East Bay would not hang their heads on that as they rallied together to surge for the comeback win. Before the halftime intermission junior Jamie McPherson (San Leandro, Calif.) would put the Pioneers on the board with a penalty goal in the 41st minute of play. For McPherson, it was her fourth goal of the season.

The second half of play belonged all to the Pioneers as they scored two more goals to come away with the win. Just minutes into the second half CSUEB's leading scorer Abby Buitrago (San Jose, Calif.) scored her fifth goal of the season on a well placed shot to the right corner of the goal. She was assisted on the goal by junior Liz Hernandez (Whittier, Calif.), which was her second helper of the season.

In the 87th minute of action junior Chace Miguel (Hollister, Calif.) put in the game-winning, go-ahead header from inside the box on a pass from Jamie McPherson to secure the 3-2 win for Cal State East Bay. For Miguel it was her fourth goal of the season and for McPherson it was her team-leading third assist of the season.

Liz Hernandez paced the Pioneers with four shots, while Lauren McDougal and Abby Buitrago added two shots each with a shot on goal each.  Jordan Lemieux (Bothell, Wash.), Aulani Fernandez (Brentwood, Calif.), Jamie McPherson, Chace Miguel and Michelle Silva (Hanford, Calif.) all added one shot apiece.

Freshman goalkeeper Briana Vasquez-Ortiz (Long Beach, Calif.) logged all 90 minutes in the box and recorded three saves.

The Pioneers will host their final home game of the 2018 season with their Senior Day match against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday morning, October 21 at Pioneer Stadium at 11:30 a.m.

East Bay will be honoring seniors: Bri Vallente, Aulani Fernandez, Savannah Shultz and Miranda Gonzalez prior to the start of the contest.
