Otters End East Bay's Win Streak at Seven

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team was defeated on the road Saturday by Cal State Monterey Bay in an extremely tight four-set match. The loss snaps CSUEB's win streak at seven.

The Pioneers also entered the evening having won 11 consecutive sets dating back four matches. During that stretch they were outstanding in crunch time and had a great deal go right for them at the end of sets. Fortune did not favor them on this night, however. All three games CSUEB lost came down to the final few points, but Monterey Bay was able to prevail in by the slimmest of margins each time.

Several Pioneers posted impressive scoring numbers despite the narrow defeat. Lindsey Ray notched yet another double-double with 12 kils and 17 digs, while setter Katie Ireland filled up the score sheet with 45 assists, 10 scoops, and five kills.

They were especially efficient in the middle and on the right side as Deja Thompson hit .400 with 11 kills and Taylor Templeman hit .391 with 10 kills. Kathy McKiernan added eight kills with a .350 attack percentage and a team-high five blocks.

Libero Natahlee Wilson also led all players in the match with 19 digs.

Unfortunately, it was a strong offensive night for the Otters as well, with the home team out-hitting the Pioneers .230 to .219 overall. CSUMB attackers Jenna Tobin (19 kills, .390 pct) and Baylie Pierson (14 kills, .367 pct) had a great deal of success.

The Pioneers will have a shot at revenge against the Otters when the teams meet for a re-match in Hayward on Oct. 26. But prior to that, East Bay heads to Southern California for a tough road trip next weekend against two nationally-ranked opponents in Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona.
