SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., -- The Pioneer women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 shutout California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) loss to San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
Â
The loss pushed Cal State East Bay to 1-5 in conference action and a 3-8 mark overall. The Gators improve to 6-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in CCAA play.
Â
SF State's offensive charge was led by Tami Kwong who scored both of the Gator's goals in the match.
Â
Kwong flashed some fancy footwork with her first goal. The freshman spun past her defender, drove right straight for the box, which drew goalkeeper
Ina Gonzalez out from the goal line. Kwong then finished to the far post for the early Gators lead. SF State's second goal game in the 59th minute when Laura Shea played a ball in from the right side into Kwong, whose first shot was blocked but she found the back of the net the second time as the ball skipped past the Pioneers defense.
Â
Although the Pioneers were unable to score a goal in the contest, it was not from lack of offensive intensity. East Bay failed to capitalize on several opportunities. A failed clearance off of a corner kick resulted in SF State falling on the ball being whistled for a foul at the top of the box. The Pioneers held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and played several dangerous balls into the box.
Â
The Gators would win the shot advantage 9-7 and the shot on goal battle 5-4.
Savannah Schultz tallied a team-best three shots for CSUEB.
Nae'lani O'Neal,
Lauren McDougal,
Janelle Herrera and
Nicole Lutz all attempted one shot for the Pioneers.
Â
Ina Gonzalez got the start in goal for the Pioneers but it was
Cheyanne Foster who would lead East Bay with over 50 minutes of game action. Gonzalez recorded one saves during the match and Foster tallied two saves for the Pioneers.
Â
Cal State East Bay will return to Hayward for a weekend home slate against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 8 against Cal State L.A. with an 2:00 p.m. start. Both games will be held at Pioneer Stadium.
