HAYWARD, Calif.,-- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team concluded its midweek home match with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday afternoon, September 27 at Pioneer Stadium.
It was East Bay's fourth consecutive loss as they moved to 1-4 in CCAA action with a 3-7 overall mark. This was also the second straight home shutout for the Pioneers.
The Otters took a 2-0 lead into the intermission after Norma Verduzco connected on a header in the 21st minute of play. In the 41st minute of the match Hannah Kind scored her third goal of the season, which would prove to be the final score of the game.
Monterey Bay held the shot advantage 9-7 and the shot on goal battle 8-4.
Nae'lani O'Neal and
Miranda Gonzalez both paced the Pioneers with two shots apiece.
Lauren McDougal,
Abby Buitrago and
Kiret Pattar all tallied one shot each for CSUEB.
Ina Gonzalez logged 90 minutes in the net for the Pioneers and tied a career-best with five saves.
Head coach
Amy Gerace felt it was the missed opportunities from East Bay to contributed to the loss.
"This wasn't a great team performance for us tonight," said Gerace. "We came out to a slow start and missed a couple good opportunities to take control of the game. Monterey Bay did a much better job than us putting away two of their chances in the first half."
Cal State East Bay will return to action Friday afternoon with a CCAA showdown across the Bay Bridge when they visit San Francisco State. The game will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Cox Stadium on Friday, September 29.
