HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2017 season with a 3-0 setback to Simon Fraser University on Saturday morning, September 2 at Pioneer Stadium.
Â
With the loss East Bay falls to 1-1-0 on the season.
Â
The game was originally scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff but was moved up to 10:30 a.m. because of extreme heat conditions in the area. With the heat suffocating Pioneer Stadium throughout the game was similar to the Clan's defense on the Pioneers.
Â
SFU (1-0-0) was in attack mode early in the match. In the 8th minute of the game junior Jenna-lee Baxter put the Clan up 1-0 with a free kick form the left side that sail perfectly over the goalie's outreached arms.
Â
Just four minutes later Simon Fraser's Kathlyn Erhardsen delivered a great pass to Emma Pringle who dibbled behind the Pioneer defense and shot the ball into the bottom left corner of the net from 15 yards out to give Simon Fraser a 2-0 advantage. SFU would take this lead into the locker room at the half.
Â
CSUEB showed great poise and resilience in the second half with an attacking style of their own. They just failed to convert any into points. The Pioneers outshot the Clan 7 to 6.
Â
In the 68th minute, Baxter crossed a ball into the box to Pringle and she headed it past the Pioneers goalkeeper for her second of the game, extending the Clan's lead to three goals.
Â
The Pioneers came close to scoring a few more times but they ultimately could not find the back of the net.Â
Â
Nea'lani O'Neal lead CSUEB with two shots on goal.
Lauren McDougal and
Abby Buitrago each added a shot on goal as well for East Bay.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper
Ina Gonzalez finished the match with one save.
Â
The Pioneers will embark on a three game road trip with games against Dominican (09/05), Fresno Pacific (09/14) and Norte Dame De Namur (09/10) before their conference home opener against Humboldt State on Friday, September 15 in Pioneer Stadium.
