HAYWARD, Calif. -- As Cal State East Bay celebrates its 60th anniversary as an institution in 2017-18, the CSUEB athletics department is taking the opportunity to make some conspicuous additions to Pioneer Gymnasium. To commemorate the University's history of excellence in athletics, the Pioneers will hang seven new banners on the east wall of the gymnasium to represent each of the school's national championship teams.
The championship banners will be officially unveiled during a ceremony in Pioneer Gym on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11:00 in the morning. The event will take place as part of CSUEB's Forever Pioneer weekend, an annual three-day alumni reunion and celebration of Pioneer pride.
In more than five decades of competition in intercollegiate athletics, the Pioneers have produced dozens of conference championship squads and hundreds of All-Americans. But only a select few teams have yet reached the pinnacle of their sport to be called the best in the country. Here are the seven national championship teams whose names will soon line the walls of Pioneer Gym:
• 1972 Women's Track & Field (AIAW Champions)
• 1977 Men's Track & Field (NCAA Division II Champions)
• 1979 Women's Cross Country (AIAW Division III Champions)
• 1980 Women's Cross Country (AIAW Division III Champions)
• 1981 Women's Track & Field (AIAW Division III Champions)
• 1988 Women's Soccer (NCAA Division II Champions)
• 2008 Women's Water Polo (NCAA Division III Champions)
All are welcome to attend the championship banner ceremony, which is free of charge. Alumni can register through the
Forever Pioneer page and have the opportunity to attend several other events, including a champagne brunch Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. before the banner unveiling.
