HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team suffered a tough setback loss in extra minutes to Humboldt State Friday night, September 15 in Pioneer Stadium.
The Pioneers and Lumberjacks battled into double overtime to decide the winner in their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener. East Bay moves to 2-3-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
Although Humboldt State doubled East Bay's total shot count (22-10) the game was pretty tight game throughout. Both squads possessed the ball well, but it would be Humboldt State who would make the most of their opportunities down the stretch.
Evan Sanchez paced the pioneers with three total shots, Grant LaFluer and
TJ Butler both chipped in two shots apiece. Luiz Salazar,
Jonathan Cuevas and
Jared Simarago finished with one shot attempt.
The Lumberjacks lit up the scoreboard first in the 41st minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Pioneers would respond with a goal from senior
Evan Sanchez in the 65th minute.
For Sanchez it was his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Sanchez's five goals is good for third in the CCAA. His 10 points are tied for fourth in the conference.
East Bay and Humboldt State would take turns attempting shots before the end of regulation play. The first overtime became a bit more, sloppy as both squads began to rack up cautions.
But it would be the Lumberjacks who would capitalize on a broken play midway through the second overtime to come away with the 2-1 victory.
Goalkeeper
Carlos Moreno recorded a career-best eight saves for the second consecutive outing. His eight saves were five more the the total for Humboldt State.
East Bay will complete their CCAA home slate with a showdown against Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon, September 17. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Pioneer Stadium.
