CSUEB Splits First Day at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team split its doubleheader Friday on the first day of the 16th annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State.

A 12-run sixth inning cemented a 12-1 victory over Chaminade (5-25) in game one. The Pioneers (19-13) then suffered their first non-conference defeat of the season in game two, as Azusa Pacific (22-14) rallied to beat them 6-5.

Olivia McWhorter allowed six hits in a complete game effort against the Silver Swords to earn her sixth victory. The Pioneer offense was dormant until the sixth, when they sent 17 batters to the plate to put the game away. Six players tallied multiple hits in the win, ad Ashley Allen and Sarah Fukushima led the way with three RBI each.

The second game followed a nearly opposite script. East Bay jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, capped off by a Jennifer Palmares two-run single. They made it 5-0 in the third on Ali Cerminara's fifth home run of the season.

After Abby Greer held APU scoreless through four frames, the Cougars finally broke out with six runs on hits hits in the fifth. CSUEB wasn't able to score in their final two at bats, and Azusa held on for the one run victory.

Greer struck out four in a six-inning complete game, but suffered the loss to drop to 9-7. Cerminara and Palmares both finished with two hits and two RBI.

The Pioneers have two more games at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday. They take on Concordia-Portland at 2 p.m. followed by Saint Martin's at 7 p.m. under the lights. Follow all the action at warriorathletics.com/TOClive.
