TURLOCK, Calif. -- Senior
Ashley Allen went 6-for-7 with two home runs on Saturday at the 16th annual Tournament of Champions, as the Cal State East Bay softball team split its two games at Pedretti Sports Complex for the second straight day.
Allen powered the Pioneers (20-14) to an 8-4 win over Concordia-Portland in the first game of the day. East Bay then fell to Saint Martin's in the nightcap by a final score of 11-3.
The CSUEB bats were hot to start the game against Concordia, scoring in each of the first three innings.
Ali Cerminara got the Pioneers on the scoreboard first with a two-run single. Then in the third, with the score tied 3-3, Allen blasted a grand slam to left field to break the game open for East Bay. She added a solo homer two innings later for an insurance run and finished 4-for-4 with five RBI in the contest.
After Concordia scored three times in the second inning against
Bailee Glover, head coach
Claire Sua-Amundson turned to
Olivia McWhorter out of the bull pen. The freshman was outstanding in relief, holding the Eagles to one run on four hits over the final 5.1 innings to earn her seventh victory.
The second game of the day did not go as well for Cal State East Bay, as Saint Martin's scored early and often to open up a big lead. SMU took advantage of five Pioneer defensive errors to score five unearned runs off
Abby Greer.
The Saints led 7-1 after two innings, and the CSUEB bats weren't able to out up a crooked number to rally back. SMU scored one in the fourth and three more in the fifth for the run-rule victory.
Allen finished 2-for-3 in game two, and
Sarah Fukushima and
Marisa Lerma both tallied RBIs in the fifth when the Pioneers tacked on two runs.
East Bay plays its final two games at the Tournament of Champions Sunday against teams from Hawaii, with a 2 p.m. showdown against Hawaii Pacific followed by a 4:30 p.m. matchup with Hawaii Hilo.
