HAYWARD, Calif. – It was only fitting that senior forward
Micah Dunhour would sink the game-winning jumper with 3.1 left to play to lift the Cal State East Bay men's basketball team to victory over Stanislaus State 68-66 on "Senior Night".
On a night where East Bay honored the six Pioneer seniors, CSUEB battled back from a late second half double digit deficit to cap off the night's festivities and snap an eight game losing skid.
With the win the Pioneers finish the 2016-17 season with a 13-15 mark overall, the program's best finish as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). East Bay completed the conference season with a 6-14 record.
Before the game the men's basketball team took the time to honor it's six seniors:
Pierre Carter,
Lamine Mbodj,
Micah Dunhour,
Jalen Richard,
Paramvir Singh and
Tre Mauldin.
Micah Dunhour paced the Pioneers with 28 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs. Dunhour went 9-for-15 from the field, including 10-for-14 from the charity stripe with a block and a steal in 35 minutes of action.
East Bay had on of its roughest shooting nights to start the game. CSUEB shot just 22.5 percent (7-for-31) from the floor in the first half of action. Despite the horrid shooting the Pioneers only trailed 32-25 at the intermission.
The Pioneers turned things around the second half firing at 48.5 percent (17-for-35) while holding the Warriors to just 38.4 percent shooting as a team. CSUEB also outscored Stanislaus State 43-34 in the second half using a 5-0 run in the final 2:30 of the game.
Druce Asah knocked down the game-tying three-pointer with 1:56 on the clock. The Warriors answered on the ensuing trip down the court to take a two-point lead but
Micah Dunhour threw down a huge two-handed jam to keep the pressure on Stanislaus State.
Freshman wing
Druce Asah tallied 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal on 29 minutes on the court. Asah routinely scored timely buckets down the stretch for the Pioneers to help lead them to victory.
Junior center
Kyle Frakes put together his second straight double figure scoring effort with 10 points and five rebounds on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. Frakes went 2-for-3 from the foul line and hammer down a couple of powerful dunks the sent Pioneer Gymnasium into a fury.
Both teams split the paint action as the Warriors outscored the Pioneers 42-28 in the painted area, but East Bay outrebounded Stanislaus State 42-40. The Pioneer bench also was a difference maker as they were more effective than the Warrior bench to a count of 34-23.
Junior guard
Drew Bender dished out a game high six assists, scored six points and collected a steal in 25 minutes off the bench. Senior
Pierre Carter added four points, five rebound and two assists in 22 minutes on the floor.
With the loss, Stanislaus State falls to 6-21 on the season and 3-17 in CCAA play.
Vondel Faniel led the Warriors with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Kaelen Mitchell added 11 points and six rebounds for Stanislaus State.
Cal State East Bay head coach
Gus Argenal was overcome with emotion after the thrilling comeback victory by his squad.
"I'm truly happy for this group," Argenal said. "This is a great win for our guys. They deserved this victory,
Micah Dunhour deserved to hit that shot. He's hit big shots for us all year. This is a special group of seniors and you want the best for them. I'm just happy we were able to end the season with a win and that will always be apart of their legacy"
