East Bay Women Fall 74-71 as Cougars Complete Comeback

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fell victim to a second-half rally by Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, losing on the road to the Cougars by a final score of 74-71.

The Pioneers drop to 4-5 for the season with a 1-3 record in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games. Each of the team's last four losses have been by three points or less, including all three conference defeats.

East Bay got off to a strong start on this night, shooting 50 percent as a team in the first half (17-for-34), while committing just six turnovers. After a tight first quarter, the Pioneers got red hot in the second, out-scoring San Marcos 26-12 to take a 13-point lead into halftime.

Senior Janae Chamois scored 11 of her team-high 16 points in the opening half, knocking down her first three attempts from three-point range.

Unfortunately, the second half was a different story. The Pioneers struggled to find the bottom of the net, shooting just 32 percent from the floor after the break. Meanwhile, the Cougars heated up behind All-CCAA forward Savannah Camp, hitting at 57 percent in the second half as a team as they chipped away at CSUEB's lead through the third and fourth quarters.

San Marcos finally took the lead with just under four minutes to play, then made their free throws down the stretch to hold off the Pioneers and complete the comeback.

East Bay had a strong performance overall from long distance, knocking down 8-of-16 from beyond the arc. But they simply didn't make enough shots to pull off the road win, totaling just nine field goals in the second half.

Junior Elayshia Woolridge scored 15 points and dished out a team-high five assists. It's her fourth straight game reaching double figures in scoring, and her sixth overall in the young season.

Sophomore Morgan Greene finished with 12 points on 6-for-11 from the field and posted team highs with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Junior newcomer Kayla Blair added eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore Kincso Kelemen came off the bench to chip in eight points in 18 minutes, hitting a pair of three-pointers.

The Pioneers next return to action on Saturday, when they will look to get back in the win column with a trip to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m. East Bay has won nine straight meetings with the Otters dating back to 2013.
