Pioneers Resume CCAA Action With Games Against Cougars, Otters

HAYWARD, Calif., -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team will get back to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action with road games against Cal State San Marcos and Cal State Monterey Bay.
 
The Pioneers will square off against Cal State San Marcos at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center Thursday, November 30 and then CSUEB will travel to Cal State Monterey Bay to play the Otters in the Kelp Bed at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 2.
 
The Pioneers are off to a 4-4 start to the season as they head back into conference play despite only playing one game in Hayward.
 
WEEK IN REVIEW
Easy Bay participated in the SF State Thanksgiving Classic and went 1-1 with a loss to Notre Dame De Namur and finishing the weekend with a win over Fresno Pacific.
 
The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team fell to Notre Dame De Namur in their first game of the SF State Thanksgiving Classic on Friday evening at The Swamp, as the Argonauts outscored the Pioneers 35-28 in the second half.
 
East Bay drops to 3-4 overall after playing their fourth non-conference match away from Pioneer Gymnasium. Notre Dame De Namur moves to 2-3 on the season with the victory.
 
The Pioneers finished the game with the advantage in a number of areas despite the final outcome of the contest. Junior guard Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) led East Bay with 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field in her second consecutive start of the season. She added four steals, two rebounds and one three-point basket on a team-high 31 minutes on the floor.
 
CSUEB was outscored the NDNU in paint points 34-24 and points off turnovers 18-9 after forcing 15 turnovers from the Argonauts. The Pioneers also a 28-24 halftime lead after after shooting 42.3% from the field.
 
Sophomore forward Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) collected her fourth straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. For Greene, it was her sixth double-double of the season. She shot 5-for-8 from the floor with two steals in 21 minutes of action.
 
The Pioneers could not find their stroke from beyond the arc shooting at just a 11.1% (2-for-18) clip from long distance from the game. The Argonauts on the other hand shot 40% from three-point range. And although the foul totals were fairly even, Notre Dame De Namur attempted 10 more free throws than East Bay did.
 
The difference in the game was East Bay's inability to knock down shots, particularly once they got a lead in the second half. The Pioneers ended up shooting just 10% from three-point land and 16.7% from the charity stripe.
 
Kayla Blair (Fairfield, Calif.) tallied seven points (3-for-7), four rebounds and two assists on 21 minutes off the bench. She went a perfect 1-for-1 from the foul line. Janae Chamois (Eastvale, Calif.) finished with six points and one three-point field goal while Chloe Kellum (Long Beach, Calif.) chipped in five points and grabbed six rebounds fro the Pioneers.
 
The Pioneer women's basketball team was victorious in their non-conference contest Saturday evening, outscoring Fresno Pacific, 43-37 in the second half to claim a 75-74 victory to close the SF State Thanksgiving Classic.
 
Senior guard Bri Guillory (Long Beach, Calif.) sunk the game-winning layup in with 00:01 left on the clock to give the Pioneers the one-point win. Guillory finished with 11 points and four rebounds on 5-for-9 shooting from the field off the bench. East Bay now moves to (4-4) on the season.
 
The tightly contested game featured eight lead changes and and seven ties. The Pioneers never led by more than two points Saturday evening, while the Sunbirds claimed a 13 point lead at the start of the second quarter.
 
Erasing memories of Friday afternoon's defeat, the Pioneer's dominated inside the painted area claiming a 42-36 advantage in paint points and outrebounding the Sunbirds 37-30 for the game. Despite carrying the edge in those categories, East Bay found themselves down, 23-13 after the opening quarter of action. The Pioneers would bounce back to pull within five points at the intermission.
 
Sophomore forward Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) earned SF State Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament honors after turning in another impressive performance with a career-best 26 points and 11 rebounds on 9-for-14 shooting from the field. Greene now has three consecutive games with a double-double and six total double-double's on the season.
 
The Pioneers managed to shot 45.8% from the floor for the game although they shot 0-for-9 from three-point range. It was CSUEB's first game not making a three-point field goal since January 2015.
 
Junior guard Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) continued her great play of late with 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting for the game. She added a team-high five assists with five rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes of action. Woolridge now has three consecutive games scoring in double figures.
 
East Bay's aggressive style of play was rewarded to the tune of a season-high 30 free throws. The Pioneers netted 21 foul shots from the charity stripe, which was also a season-best mark.
 
While CSUEB was outscored 23-31 in bench production, they still got excellent contribution for their reserve players. Senior forward Chloe Kellum (Long Beach, Calif.) tallied four points and grabbed nine rebounds with two steals in 17 minutes.
 
PIONEER POINTS
East Bay forward Morgan Greene (Phoenix, Ariz.) is off to a great start for the Pioneers. She is leading East Bay with 14.8 points and 11.3 rebounds. She is fourth in the conference in rebounding average and second in total rebounds. Greene is currently second in the nation in total rebounds and is tied for the nation lead with six double-doubles.
 
Greene was named East Bay Female Student athlete of the Week for Nov. 20-26. She has earned All-Tournament honors for both the West Region Tip-Off Classic and SF State Thanksgiving Classic.
 
Junior guard Elayshia Woolridge (Oakland, Calif.) is averaging 12.1 points and 24.1 minutes off the bench for the Pioneers. Woolridge is leading East Bay with 3.3 assists per contest while shooting 43.6% from the field. She is currently fifth in the conference in total assists.
 
Woolridge has scored in double figures in five games this season including this consecutive games.
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE SAN MARCOS
The Cal State San Marcos Cougars are off to an 0-4 start to the season. San Marcos finished the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic with a 0-2 mark with losses Azuza Pacific and Dominican. Savannah Camp is leading the Cougars with 19.0 points and 5.8 rebounds. Stephanie Custodio is adding 12.0 points and 3.0 assists for CSUSM. The Pioneers are 4-0 all-time against San Marcos.
 
SCOUTING CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY
The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters have began the season 3-4 and currently sit 2-1 in CCAA action. The Otter fell to Dominican, 64-77 before bouncing back with a 64-58 victory over Sonoma State. Aubri Smith is leading CSUMB 20.0 points and 5.0 assists. Courtney Keaton is chipping 8.7 points and 8.7 rebounds.
