HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's basketball team picked up its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory of the season on Tuesday, defeating San Francisco State at home by a final score of 59-49.
The Pioneers will head into Thanksgiving with a 3-3 record to start the 2017-18 slate after outlasting the Gators (1-1) in an uneven contest that saw 45 total fouls called.
East Bay jumped out to an early lead, scoring 17 points in the first quarter. But their offense stalled in the second quarter, and the home team went into halftime with just a three-point lead.
CSUEB's solid defense and rebounding carried them in the second half, and SF State was never able to mount a substantial rally due to an extremely poor shooting night. The Pioneers held the visitors to 33.9 percent from the floor, including 2-for-17 from three-point range. The Gators did themselves no favors at the free throw line either, finishing 9-for-22 (41 percent).
East Bay wasn't particularly stellar from the charity stripe either, shooting 58 percent (14-24), which prevented them from opening up a big lead. But the Pioneers ultimately got enough shots to fall to secure the victory. They shot 42.9 percent from the field and did most of their damage in the paint, led by
Morgan Greene and
Kayla Blair.
Both players finished 4-for-7 from the field, as Greene scored 11 points and Blair added 10. Greene also pulled in 12 rebounds to lead all players in the game, notching her fourth double-double of the young season.
Junior
Elayshia Woolridge reached double figures as well, scoring a team-high 13 points to go along with five boards and two steals.
Newcomer
Chloe Kellum gave the Pioneers valuable minutes off the bench, contributing six points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.
Janae Chamois also scored six points, and the senior dished out a game-high five assists.
East Bay is back in action this weekend following the holiday when they travel to the Swamp at SF State. A rematch with the Gators is not in order quite yet, however. The Pioneers will instead take on Notre Dame de Namur on Friday and Fresno Pacific on Saturday in non-conference action as part of the four-team Thanksgiving Classic.
