Pioneers Roll over Stanislaus in Straight Sets

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team erased visiting Stanislaus State in straight sets on Friday evening, winning the penultimate match of the 2017 regular season in front of a large crowd at Pioneer Gymnasium.

The Pioneers improve to 9-2 at home this season, the program's best mark since 2010. They are now 16-10 overall, matching their highest win total since 2011. And with a CCAA record of 9-8 heading into Saturday's regular season finale, the playoff-bound Pioneers are guaranteed at least a .500 record in conference matches.

East Bay was in control of this contest from the outset. They rolled past the Warriors 25-10 in the first game, hitting .371 with just one attack error. It was more of the same in the second set, as the Pioneers jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back.

Stanislaus showed some life in the third frame. After East Bay took an early lead, the visitors made a run midway through the set and cut their deficit to two at 14-12. But the Pioneers won the next three points and finished the set strong, prevented any hopes of a Stanislaus comeback.

The Pioneers hit .223 for the match, while holding the Warriors to a negative attack percentage. The 41 total points scored by Stanislaus is by far the fewest CSUEB has allowed in a contest this season.

Kiki Leuteneker led the way offensively with 10 kills and was the only player in the match to reach double figures. She also added five digs and four blocks. Fellow junior Julie Navarro had an extremely efficient night on the right side, posting seven kills on 12 swings for a team-best .500 hitting percentage.

Deja Thompson notched six kills and four blocks, while her partner in the middle Kathy McKiernan totaled four kills to go along with a team-high six total blocks.

Katie Ireland handled the setting duties, tallying 25 assists and leading the team with 16 digs. In the back row, Brandi Brucato racked up 14 digs, and Natahlee Wilson also reached double figures with 10.

Brucato will be the star of the pre-game ceremony on Saturday, as the Pioneers celebrate "Senior Night" prior to their final home match against Chico State. With just one game separating CSUEB and Chico in the CCAA standings, tomorrow's contest will determine which team enters the tournament as the North Division's No. 2 seed, and which team will be slotted at No. 3.
