HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team improved to 7-0 at home this season after completing a three-set sweep over visiting SF State on Saturday evening in Pioneer Gym.
It was a dominant victory for the Pioneers, who won the first and third sets handily to improve their record to 11-5 overall with a 5-3 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).Â
East Bay hit .248 for the match, while holding the Gators (6-11, 2-7 CCAA) to just 23 kills and an .048 attack percentage. The Pioneers also tallied eight blocks and six service aces.
CSUEB made just one attack error in the first frame and two attack errors in the final game, posting hitting percentages of .323 and .360. The only drama of the evening came in the second set when the Pioneers stumbled with eight attack errors and the score remained tight throughout.
East Bay trailed 18-15 in game two, before a 6-0 run put them ahead by three. With the Pioneers leading 23-19, SF State rattled off a 5-1 run to even things at 24-24. It took a few extra points, but East Bay eventually forced a pair of Gator attack errors to seal the two-point win.
Deja Thompson had a tremendous performance to lead the Pioneers, posting team highs with 14 kills, six blocks, and a .565 hitting percentage.Â
Kathy McKiernan notched nine kills and
Kiki Leuteneker added six, with both juniors making just one attack error for the night. Sophomore
Lindsey Ray had just three kills, but scooped out 11 digs.
Setter
Katie Ireland was excellent for the second straight evening, filling up the scoresheet with 32 assists, 11 digs, two aces, and four kills without an error.
Brandi Brucato posted 14 digs to lead the way in the back row.
Next up, the Pioneers are back in action at home Tuesday night when they welcome in Hawaii Hilo for a non-conference showdown at 7:00 p.m.
