Cal State East Bay continues its non-conference schedule by taking on a quartet of Bay Area opponents from the Pacific West Conference. Three of them will be familiar foes, as the Pioneers battled Academy of Art, Holy Names, and Dominican last weekend.

CSUEB is coming off a 1-3 performance at the team's season-opening tournament. They defeated Holy Names handily, and lost of Barry University in four sets. The other two matches were extremely tight, with both Academy of Art and Dominican outlasting the Pioneers in five sets.

A trio of sophomores led the Pioneers on the attack last week. Kiki Leuteneker leads the team in kills through four matches at 2.79 per set, just ahead of Deja Thompson at 2.72. Julie Navarro is averaging 2.67 kills per set. After struggling with a -.217 hitting percentage in the opener, the southpaw hit at least .260 with double-digit kills in each of the next three matches.

Newcomer Katie Ireland got the bulk of the work at setter, averaging 8.82 assists per set so far. She's also second on the team with 69 total digs, trailing junior libero Brandi Brucato, who has 99. Overall, the Pioneers have five players averaging more that four digs per frame.

Despite their record, CSUEB actually out-hit its opponents last weekend, posting a .146 attack percentage and allowing opponents to hit .135. The young Pioneer squad will look to close out sets a little better and hopefully improve their results.
