East Bay Women Earn Point on Sidtikun's Last-Second Goal

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team earned a point for the third straight contest to open the season thanks to senior Tia Sidtikun's goal in the 90th minute on Monday. The Pioneers finished their Labor Day showdown with Notre Dame de Namur in a 1-1 draw.

After a slow first half that saw much of the action in the middle of the field, the intensity ramped up in the final 20 minutes at Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers had a couple good chances in front of the net, but couldn't manage to convert, and it looked like the teams might be headed for a scoreless tie.

But in the 86th minute, Sidtikun was called for a foul in the middle the field just outside the box, a call that raised frustration on the Pioneer bench. NDNU's Vanessa Sanchez sent a free kick that hit the crossbar, bounced down in front of the goal, and found its way to Maddy Broer, who scored into the right corner of the cage.

The Pioneers pressed offensively as the clock ticked down inside one minute. They earned a corner kick from the left side, which would essentially be the final scoring chance. Savannah Schultz hurried to set up the corner as the clock ticked under 40 seconds. She then sent a beautiful ball right in front of the goal, and Sidtikun out-leaped the defense and headed it into the top right corner of the net for the equalizer.

After an extremely exciting final four minutes, the teams played a pair of scoreless overtime periods to finish in a 1-1 tie. For the game, NDNU put 11 shots on goal compared to just four for CSUEB. Pioneer goalkeeper Jasmine Corbett made a season-high 10 saves.

After a 1-0-2 homestand to open the 2016 slate, the Pioneer now travel out of state for a conference challenge tournament at Seattle Pacific. East Bay will take on Concordia-Portland on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m., followed by SPU on Monday, Sept. 12 at 12 p.m.
