Pioneers Pick up First Win of 2016 over Northwest Nazarene

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2016 season on Saturday by a final score of 1-0 over visiting Northwest Nazarene.

The Pioneers (1-0-1) picked up four points in two games during their season-opening conference challenge tournament, which also included Colorado Mesa and Stanislaus State.

Early in the contest, East Bay was successful in controlling possession and keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field. It didn't take long before the team converted its first goal of the season.

In the 29th minute, sophomore Savannah Schultz got around her defender inside the box and fired a left-footed shot. The ball deflected off NNU's keeper and the rebound bounced to fellow sophomore Janis Gamboa right in front of the net. Gamboa deposited it in the right corner of the goal to put the Pioneers on the scoreboard.

East Bay had several chances to extend its lead with scoring opportunities in front of the net, but couldn't manage to find the back on the cage again. It didn't matter, however, as the Pioneer defense turned in another strong effort, limiting NNU's scoring chances.

Junior Jasmine Corbett notched her second consecutive shutout, and she only needed to make three saves to do it as CSUEB controlled the middle of the field and got a stout performance from the back line defenders.

The Pioneers, meanwhile, tallied 14 total shots and put eight on goal. Schultz, senior Megan Ravenscroft, and freshman Carsyn Hoogendoorn finished with two each.

Cal State East Bay returns to the field on Monday for a Labor Day showdown with Notre Dame de Namur, scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
