HAYWARD, Calif – The Cal State Pioneers women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs on Friday night in Pioneer Stadium.
It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2009.
For East Bay (2-5-3) it was their second consecutive overtime game. CSUEB led the match with a 14-6 shot advantage and including seven shots on goal.
The Slugs got on the board first in the 57th minute when Megan Carey took a long clearance pass from goalkeeper Athena Del Rosario and put it over Pioneer goalkeeper
Jasmine Corbett.
The lead would not last long as Freshman
Jessey Santos answered 53 seconds later with a shot to the left post. She was assisted on the goal by sophomore
Nicole Stamper.
It was the first goal of the 2016 season for Santos.
The Pioneer women kept applying pressure the rest of the game but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
Senior
Jasmine Corbett led the East Bay with three saves including a pivotal save in the final 12 seconds of regulation play.
CSUEB will continue with its stifling defense until the final horn.
Pioneer women Head Coach
Amy Gerace was proud of how her young player came up big.
"I was excited for Jessey to score her first collegiate goal," Gerace said. "She played well and is doing a great job stepping into that position with our current injury situation. The team played well, we just didn't finish our opportunities. We have the weekend off and then will get back at it next week to prepare for another Southern California road trip."
Cal State East Bay will get back into CCAA play when they begin its three game road trip with a visit to Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, October 7. The game will be played at Cal State San Bernardino's Premier Field at 3:00 p.m.
