Pioneers Sweep SF State for First CCAA Victory

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team picked up its first victory against a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent on Saturday with a three-set victory over visiting San Francisco State at Pioneer Gymnasium (25-14, 25-17, 25-14).

CSUEB has now seen seven of its last eight matches end in straight sets. The Pioneers are 4-3 in those contests and hold a 5-7 record for the season with a 1-3 mark in CCAA play.

The victory was never in doubt on this night, as East Bay hit .250 overall, while holding the Gators to an .036 attack percentage and just 24 total kills. The Pioneers bested SF State 49 to 29 in total points, thanks in part to five service aces.

Sophomore Kiki Leuteneker had her most efficient performance of the season, hitting .375 and leading all players with 13 kills. Deja Thompson added nine kills and nine digs as the team's second-leading scorer.

Taylor Elliot added six kills, while Julie Navarro and Kathy McKiernan posted four each. McKiernan also led the squad with three total blocks.

The Pioneers topped the Gators 61 to 54 in total digs, led by libero Brandi Brucato and setter Katie Ireland with 17 each. Ireland also tallied 25 assists in the victory.

Next up, East Bay continues its homestand next weekend by welcoming in UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
