HAYWARD, Calif - The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team fell to visiting Sonoma State on Friday night by a final score of 3-1 in their 2016 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) home opener.
The Pioneers (3-5-0, 0-3 CCAA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when the goalie came out too far and senior Steffen Sauer got behind him to score the Pioneers only goal of the game in the opening minute of play.
For Sauer it was his first goal of the season and he was assisted by freshman Luis Lopez. It was Lopez's first assists of the year.
Unfortunately, the game would only be tied for seven minutes as the Seawolves responded with a goal by Armando Coronel in the eighth minute to tie the game a 1-1.
Sonoma State (2-2-3, 2-1 CCAA) would break the tie with a score from Maury Lopez in the 30th minute to take 2-1 lead into the half.
SSU would put in the final goal of the game in the 82 minute when Andrew Ogilvy put in a goal from the far left side.
The Pioneers had plenty of opportunities but could not capitalize as they were outshot 12-10 and outshot on goal 6-4.
Despite giving up three goals, the Pioneers played stellar defense throughout the entire game. CSUEB senior goalkeeper Douglas McNeil led with three saves on the night.
The Pioneers will return to action of Sunday, September 25 when they host CCAA rival Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m.
