Toros Pull away from Pioneer Men with Second Half Surge

CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team dropped its second straight road game to open conference play on Sunday afternoon, as Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled away for a 5-1 win over CSUEB.

The Pioneers trailed virtually the entire contest after the Toros' Joey Chica scored in the second minute of play to out the home team ahead.

It remained 1-0 the entire rest of the half, with both squads taking five shots over the course of the period.

The Toros came out of halftime firing and doubled their lead less than two minutes into the second frame. But the Pioneers answered back. In the 66th minute, Victor Calderon scored his first goal of the season from the top of the box to make it 2-1.

That was as close as East Bay would get, however. Chica scored on a penalty kick just one minute later, and the Toros tacked on two more goals in the final minutes.

CSUDH out-shot the Pioneers 18-7 in the second half, although the home team held just an 11-9 advantage in shot on goal for the game.

Keeper Douglas McNeill played the first 82 minutes in goal and suffered the defeat, allowing four goals and making six saves.

The Pioneers (3-4, 0-2 CCAA) now return to Hayward for a pair of home games, as they get set to host Sonoma State on Friday, followed by Humboldt State Sunday.
