Pioneers Play to Scoreless Draw on Opening Night

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Excitement was in the air on a cool, cloudy night in the Hayward Hills as the 2016 soccer season officially began, and the Cal State East Bay women's team opened its 16th year under head coach Amy Gerace. After 90 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the Pioneers played to a scoreless draw with visiting Colorado Mesa under the lights at Pioneer Stadium.

After a slow first half, the Pioneers started creating more scoring chances than the Mavericks down the stretch. East Bay ended up putting 10 shots on goal -- twice as many as their opponent.

Megan Ravenscroft led the way for CSUEB with four shots on goal. She had the best opportunity of the night after drawing a foul inside the box with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the home team, Ravenscroft's shot attempt and the CMU goalkeeper's dive both went to the lower right corner, and the Pioneers came up short as Janelle Richmond-Buccola made the save.

Both teams had a few chances in front of the net during the overtime periods, but were unable to net the game-winner. Rachel Robbert and Andrea Hernandez both finished with a pair of shots on goal.

CSUEB's defensive line turned in a strong effort, particularly early in the contest, in front of senior keeper Jasmine Corbett. Corbett tallied five saves in the shutout.

The Pioneers are back in action at home on Saturday afternoon when they host Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m.
