East Bay Ends Tournament Of Champions With Two Tough Losses

TURLOCK, Calif.-- Cal State East Bay had leads in the latter half of both of their games, but saw both of their opponents take late leads and win both games Sunday at the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State.

The Pioneers were bested 5-3 in their first game against Western Washington and lost 3-2 in their final game of the TOC. The Pioneers went 2-4 in the TOC and are now 13-21 overall.

GAME ONE: Western Washington 5, Cal State East Bay 3:

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning, Belle Placencia led-off the inning with a triple to left field to put the Pioneers in business. Placencia was brought home by a Rose Marston single to make it 2-1. Later in the inning with Marston on third base, Gabby Gonzalez delivered a single to third base that gave the Pioneers a two-run cushion.  Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with two RBI's in the game.

But the sixth inning for Western Washington would see them plate three four runs with two outs to take a 5-3 lead. The Pioneers couldn't answer in their at bats in the sixth and seventh and had to swallow another tough loss.

Placencia had two hits in three at bats for East Bay. Marston went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Tatiana Beilstein started in the circle and was effective. Beilstein went 5.2 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts despite taking the loss.

GAME TWO: Central Washington 3, Cal State East Bay 2:

East Bay got on the board in the first when starting pitcher, Sierra Clark, singled to left field to score Marston and give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers would keep the Central Washington bats at bay until the fifth inning when the Wildcats would bust out for three runs to make it 3-1. That's all the Wildcats would need as the Pioneers were unable to match the rally of the Wildcats in the fifth and suffered the two-run defeat.

Just like in the game against Western Washington, Gonzalez went 2 for 3. Gonzalez completes the six games at the TOC going 9 for 19 with six RBI's and a home run. She raised her batting average from .310 to .340 over the six games. Marisa Lerma and Clark each went 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Clark took the loss, going the distance and allowing three earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

Cal State East Bay returns home and to CCAA play with a four-game series against Cal State San Marcos beginning Friday with a doubleheader starting a 1:00 P.M. The second game of the doubleheader will commence approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
