East Bay Has Up And Down Day At Tournament Of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif.-- It was a tale of two games for Cal State East Bay as they dominated Northwest Nazarene Saturday morning, 8-1, but saw Montana State Billings score five times in the bottom of the sixth and defeat the Pioneers 6-4.

The Pioneers are now 2-2 in the 2016 Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State. Their overall record stands at 13-19.

GAME ONE: Cal State East Bay 8, Northwest Nazarene 1:

Rose Marston, Gabby Gonzalez, Marisa Lerma, Ali Cerminara, and Ashley Allen all got two hits in the 13-hit attack for the Pioneers.

Lerma got the Pioneers on the board first with a two-out, RBI single to Marston to make it 1-0 after three. Lerma went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI in the game. The game would remain 1-0 until the Pioneers busted it open in the fifth inning by putting up five runs.

The big damage of the inning was done by starting pitcher, Sierra Clark, who doubled in Lerma and Marston to extend the East Bay lead to 3-0. In addition to her two RBI's in the game, Clark picked up the win (7-7) after going five innings and allowing no earned runs on three hits with four strikeouts. Clark has won both of her starts at the TOC and has won three straight overall.

With two outs in the fifth, Allen would single through the left side of the infield to score Clark and make it 5-0. RBI singles by Meghan Araneta and Courtney Leyba would put two more on the board for East Bay and cap the scoring in the big fifth for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers kept adding on in their next time up in the sixth, plating two more runs. Cerminara recorded an RBI single to score Gonzalez and make it 7-0. Cerminara went 2 for 4 in the game. Allen knocked in her second RBI to plate Mia Ramirez to finish off the scoring for the Pioneers at eight runs. Allen is 6 for 11 with eight RBI's thus far in the tournament.

Kelsey Cairns would come in relief of Clark and finish off the Crusaders in the 8-1 East Bay victory.

GAME TWO: Montana State Billings 6, Cal State East Bay 4:

The Pioneers picked up right where they left off in game one against the Crusaders by scoring three runs in the first two innings.

Gonzalez hit her first home run of the year over the left-center field fence to give the Pioneers a 1-0 before the Yellow Jackets had a chance to bat.

After the Yellow Jackets got a run in the bottom of the first to tie it, Gonzalez would get her second RBI as she drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Allison Noble and make it 2-1 in the second. Another free base to Lerma would allow Belle Placencia to cross home plate and extend it to 3-1.

Gonzalez capped her great two games Saturday by singling to left-center to score Marston and make it 4-1 after four. Gonzalez went 2 for 3 in the second game and totaled 4 for 6 with three RBI's and a home run.

The Yellow Jackets would send nine batters to the plate in the sixth and plate five runs to snatch a 2-0 day away from the Pioneers.

Marston joined Gonzalez in the multi-hit club by going 2 for 4 with a run. Tatiana Beilstein started in the circle for the Pioneers and took the loss.

East Bay plays their final two games of the Tournament of Champions Sunday at Pedretti Sports Complex with matchups against Western Washington and Central Washington. Western Washington is first up at 9:00 A.M. The contest against Central Washington is scheduled for 11:30 A.M.
