TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team played another solid round on Tuesday at Turlock Golf & Country Club to finish in seventh place at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational. The Pioneers carded 292 (+4) in the final round, giving them a 54-hole total of 875 (+11).
It was a strong finish to the regular season for the Pioneers, who now look forward to next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships. +11 was their best score all season in relation to par. The Pioneers bested several quality schools in the 16-team field, including conference rivals Cal State San Bernardino, UC San Diego, and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Chico State, the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, captured the championship at -14. They beat out second-place Sonoma State (-7) and third-place Stanislaus State (-3), the two others schools to shoot under par for the tournament.
Adam Stone paced the Pioneers with a top-10 individual finish. He followed up 71-72 on Monday with another 71 (-1) in the final round, giving the junior a total of 214 (-2) and a share of ninth place. Stone led the entire field of 88 golfers with 40 total pars for the tournament.
Fellow junior
Chad Hall turned in the best round by a Pioneer this week with an 69 (-3) on Tuesday, moving him up into a tie for 22nd place with a total of 219 (+3). Despite just missing his sixth top-20 finish in eight events, Hall finishes the regular season as CSUEB's scoring leader (73.46 avg).
Junior
Owen Hutchison shot 77 (+5) in the final round, while senior
Joel Keylor carded a 75 (+3). Both players ended the week with a total of 223 (+7) and a share of 42nd place.
After a season-best round of 72 Monday afternoon,
Jonathan Mulvany stumbled a bit with a final-round 80 (+8), putting the freshman in 72nd place overall at 232 (+16).
The Pioneers entered the week outside the top 10 in the NCAA West Region rankings, needing strong showings in Turlock and next week in Napa to give them a shot at earning a berth. Next Monday, they travel to Silverado Resort & Spa for the 2016 CCAA Championships and will attempt to recapture some of the magic from last year's runner-up finish.
The Championships begin with 36 holes of stroke play on Monday, Apr. 18. The teams with the four lowest totals will advance to the head-to-head match play tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.
