LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay softball team was swept by No. 25 ranked UC San Diego in Friday's road doubleheader, as the Tritons won a pair of tight games, 2-0 and 4-3.
UCSD improves to 20-10 with a 14-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Pioneers drop their sixth straight to fall to 9-17 overall and 6-14 in league play.
The first game was a tremendous pitcher's duel between Pioneer senior
Sierra Clark and UCSD's Lexi Edwards. The game was scoreless into the fourth with the Tritons finally got on the scoreboard thanks to a pair of bunt singles.
The following inning, an East Bay error led to another UCSD run. That was all the support Edwards would need as she completed the six-hit shutout. CSUEB's best chance came in the top of the sixth. Two hits and a walk loaded the bases with one out, but Edwards got a strikeout and a ground out to escape the jam.
Clark went the distance as well, scattering seven hits and striking out three.
Gabby Gonzalez was the only Pioneer with multiple hits, going 2-for-2.
The Pioneers lost the second game of the doubleheader in even more heartbreaking fashion, but they did have much more success on the offensive side.
The Tritons started out hot against East Bay starter
Tatiana Beilstein, scoring a run in each of the first three innings. But the Pioneers finally got on the board in the third, as Gonzalez and
Marisa Lerma traded doubles off UCSD starter Lauren Brown.
Two innings later,
Courtney Leyba reached on an infield and Lerma and Clark both walked to load the bases with one out. That brought up
Ali Cerminara, who ripped a two-run single to centerfield to plate two runs and tie the score at 3-3.
It stayed that way into the seventh, when the Pioneers put runners on second and third, but couldn't get the two-out hit they needed to take the lead. Then in the bottom of the inning, Triton leadoff hitter Kelsi Maday reached on an error and stole second and third with one out. The Tritons then executed a squeeze bunt to bring home the winning run and secure the walk-off win.
Beilstein was charged with two earned runs and struck out three in a complete game effort. The senior has an impressive 2.56 ERA this season, but the loss nonetheless drops her record to 3-8.
Leyba had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-3. Lerma was also on base three time with an RBI double and two walks.
The four-game series concludes on Saturday with another doubleheader between the Pioneers and Tritons, scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
