HAYWARD, Calif.-- In their final two home games before they play their next 10 away from Pioneer Field, Cal State East Bay hosted cross-bay rival San Francisco State. Unfortunately, the Pioneers dropped both ends of a doubleheader Wednesday.
The Gators came from behind in the seventh inning in game one to win 3-2 and won a 1-0 pitcher's duel in game two. The Pioneers finish the series at 6-12 in the CCAA and 9-15 overall. The Gators improve to 12-8 in conference and 15-12 overall.
GAME ONE: San Francisco State 3, Cal State East Bay 2-The Pioneers got the scoring started in the second inning when
Gabby Gonzalez doubled to score
Mia Ramirez to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Gonzalez went 2 for 4 with an RBI in the first game.
The Gators tied it in the fourth with a run before the Pioneer bats got to work in the sixth.
Deanne Garza reached on a fielder's choice and promptly stole second to put herself in scoring position with two outs.
Courtney Leyba connected on a 2-1 and singled to left-center to score Garza and put East Bay three outs from victory, but it wasn't to be.
A difficult top of the seventh inning saw the Gators plate two runs and take the lead. The Pioneers went in order in the home half of the seventh and took the tough loss.
Tatiana Beilstein started the game for the Pioneers and suffered the defeat. (3-7).
GAME TWO: San Francisco State 1, Cal State East Bay-Sierra Clark and SF State's Lindsay Cassidy were stymying their opponent's bats the entire second game. Clark went the distance and allowed only an earned run on two hits with five strikeouts. Cassidy went all seven and allowed no runs on three hits and eight strikeouts.
The lone run came in the second inning when the Gators Chelsea Brent singled to score the game-winning run and handed Clark the eventual loss (4-6).
Cal State East Bay looks to rebound from their series against San Francisco State when they square-off in a four-game series at UC San Diego starting Friday at 1:00 P.M. with a doubleheader.
