East Bay And Dominguez Hills Battle To Doubleheader Split Friday

HAYWARD, Calif.-- Cal State East Bay got in front of Cal State Dominguez Hills 5-1 Friday and held on to win 6-4 in game one of a Friday doubleheader at Pioneer Field. The Toros came back in the second game and won 4-2 to force the split. The Pioneers leave the diamond with a 4-8 CCAA record and 7-11 overall. The Toros are now 6-16 in conference and 9-20 overall.

GAME ONE: Cal State East Bay 6, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4

A Sierra Clark two-RBI double that scored Rose Marston and Marisa Lerma gave East Bay a 2-0 lead. The Toros got a run back in the second to make it 2-1, but the Pioneers would put some distance between the two teams with a big third inning.

Ali Cerminara would single in Marston to make it 3-1, but the big blow came next. Allie Kornahrens would hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Toro shortstop Ivy Campbell and went into the outfield. The error allowed Lerma and Cerminara to score for a 5-1 Pioneer lead after three.

The fifth inning for the Toros put a scare into the Pioneers as they had already scored three runs to reduce the lead to 5-4 and had the tying run on third base.  Starting pitcher Tatiana Beilstein, who was relieved by Bailee Glover in the fifth, before Cal State East Bay Head Coach Claire Sua-Amundson brought Beilstein back in was able induce an 0-2 groundout from Toro hitter Rachel Sandoval to get the Pioneers back in the dugout with the lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, East Bay got an insurance run when Ashley Allen doubled to left-center to score Anissa Maldonado to make it 6-4.

The Toros put runners on first and second in the seventh, but were unable to plate any runs and the Pioneers won game one 6-4.

Marston led the Pioneers offensive attack going 3 for 4 with two runs. Lerma went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Cerminara went 1 for 1 with two RBI's.

Beilstein totaled seven innings starting and relieving and picked up the win (2-5). The right hander allowed only an earned run on nine hits and had a career-high six strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Cal State Dominguez Hills 4, Cal State East Bay 2

Just like the first game, the Pioneers grabbed an early lead when the starting pitcher, Clark, singled to score Marston and give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

The Toros would take the lead in the third with two runs and another two runs in the fifth to give them a 4-1 lead.

With runners on second and third and two outs in the sixth, Courtney Leyba singled to score Gabby Gonzalez and bring the Pioneers to within two at 4-2. That is as far as the rally would go and the Pioneers would drop the game and look forward to Saturday's doubleheader with the Toros.

Clark took the loss (4-4), but had a good start Friday. The lefty threw all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.

Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills complete their four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 A.M. The second game will follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
