East Bay Men Finish 2nd at Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout

VALLEJO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team took second place this week at their home tournament, the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. The Pioneers posted a three-round total of 879 (+27) at the par-71 Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.

Sonoma State captured the team championship at +19. East Bay made a comeback in Tuesday's final round, shooting 294 (+10) to cut eight strokes off their deficit, but the Seawolves hung on after grabbing a big lead with a tournament low 282 (-2) in the second round. 

A pair of Pioneers posted top-five finishes to earn All-Tournament honors. Adam Stone fired the lowest round of the day with a 68 (-3) on Tuesday to finish tied for second place individually at even-par 213 for the week behind tournament champion, Taylor Hood, of Cal State San Bernardino who shot 210 (-3) over 54 holes. Chad Hall carded 71 (E) in the final round to place fifth overall at 214 (+1). 

East Bay turned in totals of 290 (+6) and 295 (+11) in the first two rounds on Monday. They entered the final round trailing by 16 and made up some ground on Tuesday, but were unable to erase the sizable deficit. The CSUEB "A" squad topped eight schools in the 10-team event, including conference rivals Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills. 

Stone turned in cards of 74 (+3) and 71 (E) the first two rounds, then vaulted up the leaderboard with his 68, which was the second-lowest round by any golfer in the tournament. He was also second among all players in the field of 54 with 12 pars. Hall fired 73 (+2) and 70 (-1) on Monday to put himself in contention and remained consistent with his final-round 71. The junior racked up 37 pars, second-most of any player for the week.

Jaskaran Sihota was impressive in round one with a 71 (E), the followed that up with back-to-back 78s (+7) to finish in a tie for 20th place individually at 227 (+14). Owen Hutchison was two strokes behind him in 25th place at 229 (+16) after carding rounds of 75 (+4), 76 (+5), and 78 (+7). 

Barrett Taylor rounded out the East Bay "A" team's week with a total of 230 (+17), putting him in a tie for 26th place. The senior had a season-best round of 72 (+1) to open the tournament, then shot scores of 81 (+10) and 77 (+6) in the final two rounds. 

The Pioneers also got a strong showing by their "B" team, which placed sixth in the tournament with a total of 909 (+57) and bested CSUDH, Brevard, Notre Dame de Namur, and West Hills College. The fivesome shot 299 (+15) to open the week, followed by back-to-back rounds of 305 (+21). 

Senior Joel Keylor posted three solid rounds to lead the "B" squad, carding 73 (+2) in the first and third rounds, sandwiched around a 75 (+4) in round two. Keylor notched his best finish of the season with 12th place at 221 (+8). 

Sophomore Ignacio Ognian was just a stroke behind his teammate with a three-round total of 222 (+9), giving him a season-best finish as well with a share of 13th place. Ognian improved each round, shooting 75 (+4), followed by 74 (+3), and finally 73 (+2). 

Jonathan Mulvany turned in cards of 75 (+4), 79 (+8), and 80 (+9) to notch a 34th place finish with a total of 234 (+21). Juniors Connor Lawrence and Trevor Spade were just behind the freshman at 236 (+23), tied for 38th. Lawrence shot 78-77-81 for the week, while Spade went 76-81-79. 

Redshirt freshman Grayson Sorci competed as an individual and had a solid week, tying for 26th place at 230 (+17). He had scores of 81 and 77 sandwiched around an impressive 72 in the second round.

Cal State East Bay has now finished as runner-up in two straight tournaments to open the Spring. The team has two weeks off before competing in the UC San Diego SoCal Intercollegiate on Mar. 21-22.
