Pioneers Dominant in CCAA Showdown with Stanislaus State

TURLOCK, Calif.-- Friday at Chico State, the Pioneers needed a Madison Craig steal to secure their fifth straight victory. Saturday, Cal State East Bay ended the drama early in an 84-62 win over Stanislaus State in a showdown of two of the top teams in the CCAA. The sixth straight win for the Pioneers improves their CCAA record to 13-2 and 19-4 overall. The Warriors dropped to 10-4 in the conference and 14-6 overall.

Cal State East Bay entered the day tied for second place with UC San Diego in the CCAA and Stanislaus State was all alone in fourth place. What was expected to be a tough game for the Pioneers turned out to be a blowout.

"It was great road win for us tonight, as Stanislaus had not lost at home," said head coach Suzy Barcomb. "We shot the ball incredibly well from outside tonight. It was great to break out and knock some shots down. We really shared the ball tonight and made the extra pass."

The Pioneers scored the first 10 points of the game and ended the first quarter leading 26-11. After Laci Effenberger hit one of her seven three-pointers in the game, the Pioneers led 45-16 with 3:43 left in the first half. The seven three pointers is the second time Effenberger has accomplished the feat this season and is a single game record she shares with former Cal State East Bay players, Holli Howard and Robyn Crispi.

Effenberger broke the single season record for three pointers made by a Cal State East Bay player Friday at Chico State. She sank her 63rd three pointer at Chico and now adds seven more to record in her 21 point effort Saturday. The Pioneers had a big 52-30 lead at the half, but would see the Warriors go on a 14-3 run to close the lead to 11 at 55-44 in the third.

Cal State East Bay would halt the Warriors run right there and end the third up 65-50. The fourth quarter would look more like the first half as they outscored Stanislaus State 19-12 and ended their weekend in the Central Valley a perfect 2-0.

The win coupled with UC San Diego's 65-58 win over Cal State San Bernardino Saturday keeps both teams tied for second in the conference. Cal State Dominguez Hills maintains first place with a 14-1 conference mark.

Not to be outdone by Effenberger's exploits Saturday, Shannon Bland poured in 20 points on 6-12 shooting and 4-5 on three pointers.

Ashleigh Anderson had a career-high 17 points on 5-12 from the field and 6-6 from the charity-stripe. Anderson also grabbed five rebounds.

In addition to her terrific night shooting, Effenberger had six assists. Craig matched Effenberger with six assists of her own.

"We handled their pressure well throughout the game," Barcomb added. "Our guard play tonight was on point, and we got great contributions by everyone."

Bianca Littleton had a season-high seven rebounds to lead CSUEB in that category.

Overall, Cal State East Bay shot 48.1% (26-54) compared to 40% (18-45) for Stanislaus State. The three pointers were the big difference for the Pioneers Saturday as the made 14-24 (58.3%) to the Warriors 5-12 (41.7%).

Cal State East Bay turned 16 Stanislaus State turnovers into 17 points. The Warriors converted 10 Pioneer turnovers into 10 points.

Cal State East Bay begins their final regular season road trip with a trip to Humboldt State Thursday.

Tip-off is set for 5:30 P.M.
