SAN RAFAEL, Calif.-- Cal State East Bay got out to a huge 9-0 lead spurred by crooked numbers in the fourth and seventh innings. Dominican University would score three runs in the ninth, but the Pioneers but it was six short of what they needed in the 9-3 Pioneer victory in game one of the Saturday doubleheader. Game two didn't go as well as they dropped a 6-4 decision to leave San Rafael with a 1-1 record after opening day for the Pioneers. The Penguins are now 1-3 after the doubleheader.
Game One- Cal State East Bay 9, Dominican University 3Courtney Leyba will never forget her first collegiate at bat as the freshman homered over the center field wall in the first inning to the give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
Sierra Clark held the Penguin bats at bay and
Ali Cerminara homered to left field in the fourth inning to up the Pioneers lead to 2-0.
Sierra Sabathia and
Marisa Lerma scored on unearned runs to complete the three run fourth and a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The home run parade for the Pioneers continued in the sixth inning as
Rose Marston launched a pitch over the fence to extend the lead to 5-0.
Cal State East Bay put away any notion of a Penguin comeback in their half of the seventh as they plated four runs; three coming on unearned runs to make it 9-0 on their way to their first win of 2016.
Clark was superb in the circle going six innings of shutout ball on five hits with seven strikeouts. The seven strikeouts was a career-high for Clark in earning her first win of the season.
Cerminara, Marston, Leyba, and Lerma each had two hits to lead the Pioneers. Lerma's two hits came with two RBI's.
Game Two- Dominican University 6, Cal State East Bay 4The Pioneers got on the board in the first inning when Marston doubled to left center to score Cerminara and
Gabby Gonzalez and give CSUEB a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers would hold the Penguins scoreless until the third inning when they allowed three runs to lose their lead. The Penguins would add another three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead.
Cal State East Bay wouldn't go down without a fight as
Belle Placencia launched the Pioneers fourth home run of the day to score Marston and put CSUEB down 6-4. Unfortunately, the Pioneers weren't able to get any closer and had to settle for an opening day split.
Cal State East Bay will open up CCAA play at Cal State San Bernardino for a four game series starting Friday with a doubleheader.
First pitch Friday is slated for 12:00 P.M.Â
